About a generation ago there was a joke--I think convergence within the euro zone has made it obsolete--a not very politically correct joke playing on stereotypes about the characters of different European nationalities and the jobs that they would have in heaven and in hell.

You see, the idea was that in heaven:

Job	Heaven	Hell
Cooks	Italians	British
Lovers	French	Swiss
Engineers	Germans	Italians
Bureaucrats	Swiss	French
Secret Police	British	Germans

It seems to me that the same kind of table could be drawn for the three cities in which Jeffrey Frankel has lived--Berkeley, Washington, and Cambridge--and in what respects heaven and hell are like those cities.
