October 2000

Median Family Income

  • Between 1947 and 1973 median family income grew at 2.8% per year.
  • Between 1973 and 1989 median family income grew at less than 0.4% per year.
  • The current cycle--from 1989 to the present--has not seen any acceleration in the growth of median family income.
  • The past several years, however, have seen median family income grow relatively quickly--at 2.5% per year.
  • Does this herald an end to income stagnation? We hope so.
