Productivity Growth
2002-04-10

- Rapid productivity growth in the second half of the 1990s drove rapid economic expansion.
- Rapid productivity growth in the second half of the 1990s allowed for rapid real wage increases without rising inflation--and so for lowered unemployment, as the Federal Reserve did not feel obliged to curb demand and let unemployment rise in order to control inflation.
- Productivity growth has continued to be remarkably strong throughout the recent recession.
- That productivity growth is strong in recession suggests that it will be very strong during the forthcoming expansion: the outlook for productivity growth and output growth over the medium term looks very bright.
