The slowness in handling comments, irritating when they are loaded, and absurd when posting a comment (hence the standard triple comment posts of people who don't believe their comment has gone through) have to be the worst current aspect of Movable Type.

7.8 GB? That would be a little more than 90,000 page hits (if you ignore the existence of comments). Interesting, I've been curious about the readership of some of these blogs (whether anybody actually reads them), but they never post anything about that.

Of course, I still have no idea who reads this blog. Does anybody?

I don't actually think the slowness of the comments is Moveable Type's fault. I've used MT for multiple blogs, and comments were the speediest of any major blogging utility I've used.

Incidentally, you don't have to wait for the comments to refresh when you're posting one. Give it about ten seconds, then click on the comments link again. Your new comment should be there.

Of course, if you end up losing your comment this way, it's not my fault. =)

Moveable Type actually has some of the fastest comments around (I've used it for several blogs and never had a problem). I'm not really sure what's going on with the Prof's comments...very uncharacteristic for MT.

Brad: One of the reasons your bandwidth usage is so high is the size of your RSS feed. Chop that down to contain only the last, say, 15 posts, and you'll save a nice chunk of bandwidth.

Upgrade, and then charge people for the privilege of posting. Pooh certainly wouldn't mind a few bucks a month (say $10, payable half-yearly) to this end. You might possibly exempt students from the charge, apart, of course, from those attending Stanford Junior College.

You should provide some facility for voluntary donations whether or not you do in fact upgrade.

In any event, just don't expect anything very much from those mostly good but utterly misguided folks at the National Review or AEI.

Brad:
A lot of that bandwidth probably comes from people trying to read your blog on its RSS feed. I had to bump yours down to the bottom of my list, because the feed you send out is so large -- usually 160 KB -- that kept causing my other subscriptions to time out. What really catches my attention is that your feed downloads to my computer every time; other Movable Type blogs don't do that.

That's just my $.02. Hope you're having a great weekend.

I agree with my cousin Geoffrey up there -- a lot of that bandwidth probably does come from your RSS feed. I had to move your blog down to the end of my subscription list, because your feed carried so much data -- about 160 KB, usually -- that it kept causing other sites to time out. Another thing is that your feed reloads in full every time my program (NetNewsWire) checks it; other Movable type feeds don't do that.

Just for the record, the speed of comments usually varies based on what server you're running on, but we do notice that having static individual archives (like all TypePad pages do) is usually faster than popping up a comment form, so that may be a benefit for you if your existing server's a bit slow in displaying comments.

Here's my strategy:
First, I use the page generated by the "permanent link" link to post comments, since (in my browser, at least), that page comes up with everything, whereas the comments window has almost no browser controls.

Second, I post.

Third, I get frustrated that my oh-so-precious thoughts don't get posted in a reasonable amount of time and might even be wiped out by an evil timeout.

Fourth, because I have all the browser controls available, I open a duplicate window. In that one, I just click on "refresh" occasionally, to see if the post has appeared.

Usually the post appears when it's done in the original window---so it's not clear the duplicate window step does any good other than make me feel better about things.

I've had repeated timeouts with the post apparently gone into the ether, only to appear a minute later (often, embarassingly, as a dreaded multiple post).

I think it would be quite easy for the Movable Type people to add a method to prevent multiple posts.

There are several things you could do which would cut your bandwidth by 80% or more.

1) As Greg Greene noted, your RSS feeds are bandwidth pigs. Remember, every RSS subscriber is going to be fetching your feed once an hour. Do they really need to be fetching your entire FOAF file (folded into index.rdf) each time? And do you really want the full content of each post in the <description> field? Some people like to read blogs in an RSS aggregator -- those folks appreciate a "full-content" feed -- others simply want to be informed of new postings. The latter would be happy with a short excerpt, rather than the full content. Maybe you should offer both types of feeds, and let subscribers choose the one which suits them.

2) Both your feeds and your HTML pages are *highly * compressible. Enabling mod_gzip (since your server is Apache 1.3.x; for Apache 2.0.x, I would recommend mod_deflate) will cut the number of bits sent down the wire by 70-80%.

3) As to slow comments (not a bandwidth issue, but still an annoyance), this is largely a function of the time required to rebuild all the "affected" pages when a comment is added. See http://www.seanwillson.com/archives/2003/04/27/000501/index.php
for a way to optimize this (rebuild only those pages that *really* need to be rebuilt) in MovableType.

3) Since you do have individual archive pages, it's not really necessary to run the mt-comments.cgi script to view the comments on an entry. Instead, you could have the link point to the comment listings on the Individual Archive Page. This would cut down on CPU usage on the server, which would, again, make your site more responsive.

What's the big deal about not shipping MySQL client source in PHP any more? I always considered it a source of trouble to have MySQL statically linked into PHP: It meant trouble if other parts of Apache were also using MySQL library functions. And using the system's MySQL libraries with PHP is very easy anyways. Dropping the bundled MySQL code will only make things easier.

Iraqi oil is calculated to not pay back what we've spent for at least 10 years so Bush didn't do this for himself. He has information on his desk and has to make a decision. 12 years of sanctions did not work, Saddam was still killing and torturing the people. What do you want done? We can't go to every single country and get rid of every torturers like we should because anti-war people don't want us to. Fine then. But at least shut up long enough for us to take out the worst of the worst. You were quiet for Clinton in Bosnia. I heard not one peep out of anti-war people then. If you keep track of military stuff, you know that we bombed the stuffing out of Bosnia for a long time and that air power alone was enough to make them capitulate. The right thing is the right thing, even if you hate the person doing it, such as Bush. Do you actually think Bush is a bad person? What if you did what you thought was right, and everyone said you were evil, and did it for other reasons. Easy for you to criticize when he's not there to reply.

it's 180degree turn... 360 ends up facing the same direction... I almost threw up when I watched these debates... I didn't vote for him but I also didn't pay attention to him during the campaign... I know I'll listen to election campaigns more closely now... provided we even have the right to vote by the end of his term! Heck, at current count it's 3 wars in 18 months without a single declaration of war. The man is truely a threat to world peace. It surprises me that only Comedy Central has picked up on this, these debates need to be aired on all the news stations.
