That this has become the issue of the day with almost no counterpoint about Bush's military service, or lack thereof, shows that the strategy has largely been successful. It remains to be seen if there will be any significant backlash now that Swift Boat Liars for Bush have been exposed (or if they have even *been* exposed for CNN and Fox viewers). The question is will the electorate send a message to Bush about this kind of campaigning or not?

Posted by: Dubblblind at August 22, 2004 08:23 PM

Dubblblind, i'm afraid we can answer that question: no, the public won't send a message.

That doesn't mean that Kerry won't win the election, but it won't be because there is some big outburst of disgust at the swifties and the bush/rove utilization of the Big Lie technique; for whatever reason (and we could speculate deep into the night as to causes) the public's capacity for outrage has shrivelled....

If you want to sound off about the Swift Boat Big Lie, the quickest way to do so is by a DOS. Simply send a link to the Swift Boat site, and have them send links to all their friends. Make a shortcut to their site on your Desktop, and then everyone click on their Swift Boat links as often as possible throughout the day. Here's an anonymous way to send that link to your friend, that'll keep you out of Homeland Defense's maw:

Tell your friends to use the same anonymous post method on Ari's post, then send the URL link to:

Admin@SwiftVets.com
Admin@swift1.he.net
Admin@swift2.he.net

You can set it up, then just keep hitting Back,
then hit Send over, and over, and over again.
The SwiftVets.com post will slow their site,
the swift1.he.net post will slow their videos, and swift2.he.net will slow the contributions.

Ex. h_ttp://toolbox.academicpriority.co.il/recommend.php/en/?http://www.swiftvets.com/
(Remind them remove "_" choss on "h_ttp" portion)

Brings up this box:

Friend's email: Admin@swift1.he.net
Your email: Admin@swift2.he.net
Your name: DOS
Send

Just keep hitting Send, then Back, then Send.

Tell your friends to tell their friends. DOS is as American as, say, Bush Administration and the FDA denying all Americans the right to buy their prescription drugs in Canada; or Administration and Homeland Defense denying Americans the right to visit Cuba on holiday; or Administration and Treasury denying Americans the right to send aid to Palestine or Iraq, (except through theft of their taxes into a Halliburton IDIQ fluff con);
or Administration and State using our tax money to deny the democratically-elected (and recently referendumed) President of Venezuala his right to freedom from CIA-financed agents provacateur.

This whole Bush con is about denial of service,
and theft of our treasures as fast as they can, locking their ill-gotten Dot.Bomb stocks pump-and-dump insider-trading profits under Bush's tax plan giveaway onto our grandchildren's backs.

"Who shall have this morsel?" going to their elite vampiroyal cronies, while Americans get only skin, feathers and bones, if anything.

Was there ever so venal a US Administration?
Was there ever so arrogant a gang of prigs?

"That doesn't mean that Kerry won't win the election, but it won't be because there is some big outburst of disgust at the swifties and the bush/rove utilization of the Big Lie technique"

"Big lie technique?" John Kerry's people have already admitted that he lied about spending Christmas 1968 in Cambodia. Karl Rove and the allegedly evil Republicans have nothing to do with it.

Posted by: David Thomson at August 22, 2004 11:12 PM

“Just keep hitting Send, then Back, then Send.”

Isn’t this against the law? If so, why hasn’t Brad Delong done something about it?

Posted by: David Thomson at August 22, 2004 11:14 PM

Er, David. First, there is by now overwhelming evidence that the SBVTers have told wholesale lies about their supposed wartime experiences with Kerry -- and that Bush has told wholesale lies about his supposed lack of ties to the SBVTers. That by itself would raise the question of whose lies are bigger and more important -- but today the first evidence also came in that Kerry might possibly have been honestly mistaken, rather than deliberately lying, about where he spent Christmas Eve 1968.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5771731/ :

" 'I don’t think anyone knows for sure whether or not they were in Cambodia that night, but they were near Cambodia on Christmas Eve,' John Hurley, who heads a pro-Kerry veterans group, said on 'Fox News Sunday.' 'He was five miles into Cambodia on a different occasion.' "

Still, it is interesting that Kerry won't sign a "180" form to release all his military records -- just as it's interesting that Bush also refuses to sign a 180 form to authorize release of HIS wartime (one can't call it "war") record. By all means, let them both do so simultaneously, so we can see whose behavior during the Vietnam War really was smellier.

But meanwhile, we are left with the fact pointed out by that naughty conservative iconoclast Andrew Ferguson in the Weekly Standard: the choice remains one between a man who may perhaps have embellished his wartime record somewhat, but DID unquestionably show up for the war and repeatedly risk his life -- or another man who used his daddy's political connections to dodge the draft completely and instead gain a mainland job which (by his own statement) he thought might be useful for his future commercial career, and then perhaps didn't even fulfill that obligation.

(Actually, Bush's statements as to why he decided to try for a position as a National Guard flyer instead of remaining susceptible to the draft are strikingly reminiscent of John Wayne's explanation for why he didn't join the war effort during WW II: "They didn't offer me a commission." According to William Manchester, Wayne was not beloved among the troops in the Pacific, who routinely referred to him by his real name: "Marion".)

Posted by: Bruce Moomaw at August 23, 2004 12:18 AM

David Thomson wrote, "John Kerry's people have already admitted that he lied about spending Christmas 1968 in Cambodia."

Suppose it's true. How does it compare to Bush lying about WMDs in Iraq. And don't give me the tired c*** that Bush didn't know there were none.

Posted by: liberal at August 23, 2004 04:42 AM

NPR ran a disheartening story this morning about the positive bounce Bush is getting from the SBV nonsense. It only heightened my mixed feelings about Kerry's response.

On the one hand, Bush deserves to be flogged. I've seen a lot of shameful behavior, but this takes the prize. But the more Kerry keeps it in the news, the more John O'Neill gets to go on TV at no charge. And O'Neill is a good enough liar that he never looks flustered or crazy.

Now that Kerry has decided to fight back, however, he ought to carry it through. He seems to be doing so: the newest ad pins the smear campaign directly on Bush. This is probably the right way to go. Better to drag Bush down then get into a pissing match with the SVB lunatics.

Posted by: JR at August 23, 2004 05:21 AM

Tom Oliphant had a nice op-ed in the Sunday Boston Globe in which he demolishes the SBV smear and the Bush Administration's role. He also argues that the emergence of 24-hour cable news and talk radio has made such smear campaigns more effective. Oliphant compares the success of O'Neill today vs his failure thirty years ago.

While there may be some truth to this, it is not the case that dishonest smearing hasn't been effective in the past. The key difference today seems to be that small groups without the benefit of political office can manufacture and coordinate "scandals" to an unprecedented degree.

Posted by: JR at August 23, 2004 05:34 AM

I believe the Kerry campain should have an exit strategy about this. It cannot get trapped discussing this bull until Nov. 2. I think that if this goes on, one option would be to turn up the heat of George PetGoat Bush's service. And systematically remind the people that while Kerry was spending Xmas on one of the two sides of the border with Cambodia, his opponent was AWOL suffing his nose with cocaine and playing pool with ambitious secretaries. Create some news about this if necessary. There are surely some elements of Bush's AWOL that haven't been publicized yet. If the Dems are systematic enough in pounding this message, the other side may decide this is not such a good thing on run on after all. Another thing consists in organizing resitence and get high profile Dems on TV delivering the right message. I am more optimistic than Howard in the public's capacity for ourage, or at least disguss, they just have to be massaged that way. Only if Dems play the helpless victims again, does this need to really hurt.

Posted by: Jean-Philippe Stijns at August 23, 2004 06:13 AM

Jean: I doubt there's time for an exit strategy. In fact, you're advice to Kerry to take the offensive implies the same. Since this nonsense is now in the fabric of the campaign, I'll build on your ideas and propose three talking points for the Democrats:

(1) Ignore the SBVs. Pin the smear campaign squarely on Bush.
(2) Ask where Bush was during the Vietnam war.
(3) Most importantly, remind voters that this is all just a gigantic distraction from Iraq and the economy.

Any others?

Posted by: JR at August 23, 2004 06:32 AM

Soon we'll get past this preliminary bout of Kerry's medal grubbing and into the main event: Kerry's accusations that all Vietnam veterans committed war crimes and that this was known at "all levels of command" as Kerry carefully notes. In the main event, we won't have to rely on hazy recollections of 35 year battles. We have video tape of Kerry laying it all out for all to see and hear. Vietnam veterans can now pin the rose on one of the anti-war personalities who was such a proponent of these malicious war crimes charges: John Kerry.

Have read with fascination all the attack schemes above -- and with not a little skepticism. None of this counter-attack, not even the riposte site, does more than make us Kerry supporters feel a little superior, a little self-satisfied for a moment or two. The people who have seen the ads and whose minds have been changed by them are not clever netsters, I betcha. They watch TV ads. They check Fox for "balance."

And then, someone's sure to make a big story out of internet liberals jamming up the Swifties' site, college-kid style. Swifties vs. lefties.

JR makes the most sense.

Posted by: Bean at August 23, 2004 07:44 AM

Two quick Vietnam stories -- for the majority of the electorate who are too young to remember the whole thing:

1.) I registered for the draft on my 26th birthday, the day on which I would become ineligible, chosen exactly to show my contempt for The System. The white-glove Republicans who ran the draft board at the Armory on 15th or 16th Street, within sight of the White House, did not notice my gesture. I walked through the door side by side with two 18 year-old black guys, and without thinking for a moment the ladies behind the counter directed us to opposite ends. They inducted me into Draft Board Number 1, along with all the ambassadors' children, and with a quota of zero. The two youngsters got filed into Draft Board 387, I think it was, which had a quota of line up for the plane to 'Nam right now.

2.) At one point in 1968 the military brought General Maxwell Taylor back to the US to speak on college campuses, to raise support for the war among the young. For his first speech they chose University of Mississippi, which they thought might be a safe venue. Unfortunately a kid took after him with a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, which he had stolen from the ROTC, of which he was a member. End of Maxwell Taylor speaking tour.

What is happening in the US right now around Iraq is, it seems to me, rather the same thing all over: the white-glove Republican ladies blundering through in what they think is the decent and normal way of doing things, and the people who actually live in the real world saying "Hey, folks, you've got it wrong."

David Thomson's pathetic "isn't this against the law" is classic of the Adrianauts blind support of Bushevikski's and their Neocon Politburo.

1) Swiftboat has committed, and is committing bold libel, plain and simple. Egregious libel!
That is an illegal act under State and Fed law.

2) They are using their website, the USMail and media to commit their libel. That's a *felony*, using interstate commerce to commit any illegal act, and so everyone who sends them donations is guilty of aiding and abetting that felony.

3) The Swiftie spokesman, General LittleDick or whatever his name is, is/was a volunteer for the Bush Re-election Campaign, a violation of the Federal Campaign Laws mandating 527 PAC versus RNC/DNC separation. That is a *Federal felony*. The fact that LittleDick quit the RNC doesn't make the felony OK, just like throwing your gun out the window after holding up a bank isn't still armed robbery.

4) The SwiftBoat's specific goal is to undermine substantive debate on the national Presidential elections, our most sacred institution, in order to subvert the democratic process and so steal the election. Again. That's *sedition*, a hang-able offense, even in peacetime.

5) The President, the Attorney General, and the FBI are all aware, have been *specifically* made aware of this libel, of the interstate commerce felony, and the 527 felony ... anyone inside the Beltway would also immediately recognize that the Swiftlet's are committing sedition.

Yet the Executive does nothing ... in time of war! There is a significant body of Federal law dealing with the commission of sedition in time of war, and of aiding and abetting that sedition.

The failure to stop or attempt to prevent the commission of a felony, a *string of felonies*, is in itself a felony. That would constitute breach of office, breach of the public trust, and sedition, which is an *impeachable offense* and also, by definition in wartime, *treason*.

Hang 'em from the yard-arms!

Now let's get back to real issues. War in Iraq. Endless racist war against the dark bogie man. Our failing economy. The collapse of wages. The spiraling cost of goods and services. The real estate bubble. Immigration. The runaway Defense Department. The runaway Homeland Defense budget. The wholesale theft of health, education and welfare funding. BushCo's embezzlement of our national honor and goodwill among all nations. His NeoCrat Party deficit-and-spend policies masquerading as Republican. His tax breaks for the rich, while cutting promised SEC funding. His promise of AIDS funding that never happened. His anti-gay Constitutional Amendment! His National Health Care Act con, forcing retirees to join HMO denial-of-service organizations in return for tiny refunds on overpriced US meds.

Viet Nam happened a long, long, long time ago.
So play nice, or the hangman's coming for you!

On April 23, 1971, John Kerry appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
From page 188 of the hearing record: "I realize that even my visits in Paris . . . in a sense are on the borderline of private individuals negotiating, et cetera. I understand these things."
The prohibition against private individuals negotiating--which has been on the criminal statute books since John Adams was President--is contained in 18 U.S.C. Section 953 and is a felony.

That also disqualifies him from the office of President according to law.

Posted by: Darksheare at August 23, 2004 11:00 AM

If Kerry wants to complain about '527' and supposed violations of it, perhaps he'd like to explain these real violations:

Zach Exley - former director of special projects at MoveOn, now Kerry's director of online communications

Robert Gibbs - former Kerry campaign press secretary now with Americans for Jobs, Healthcare and Progressive Values

Jim Jordan - former Kerry campaign manager, now with Americans Coming Together and the Media Fund

Rodney Shelton - was with Americans Coming Together, now the Kerry campaign director in Arkansas

Joseph Sandler, MoveOn.org Voter Fund lawyer, general council DNC

Kerry is pulling the communist playbook move of accusing others of his own actions.
And he'll do anything ot keep the focus off his own record that he is running on.
Threaten FEC actions, threaten to sue..
But he's SO inclusive and accepting..

Posted by: Darksheare at August 23, 2004 11:01 AM

Nat Hentoff noted that the Pentagon has responded to a Washington Post Freedom of Information Act request for Kerry's full military file by turning over just six pages of their 100-plus page Kerry dossier, with a spokesman explaining that Kerry himself wouldn't authorized the release of the full file.
Why won't Kerry authorise full disclosure?
He wants to whine about W's service record, which has been released in full, while not bothering to do the same himself.
Isn't that, ack, hypocritical?
If he wants to attack someone about their service record, and run on his own service record, shouldn't he release his FULL records?

Can't complain about service records while simultaneously hiding your own.

Posted by: Darksheare at August 23, 2004 11:02 AM

Without getting too involved, Dark does not understand the difference between serial and parallel. You can be with a campaign, and you can be with a 527 but not at the same time.

And Jim Jordan, come on, Kerry fired him. Remember.

Posted by: Eli Rabett at August 23, 2004 01:22 PM

Really?
And this isn't illegal co-ordination: Joseph Sandler, MoveOn.org Voter Fund lawyer, general council DNC

Eli, you're confused.
And you're spinning.
Out with it Eli, why hasn't Kerry released his records?

The absolutist, totalitarian impulse that animates the modern right-wing is well on display in this set of comments. The only one that merits a response is Lawrence's: Lawrence, read the actual testimony, ok, before you start distorting it.

"The absolutist, totalitarian impulse that animates the modern right-wing is well on display in this set of comments. The only one that merits a response is Lawrence's: Lawrence, read the actual testimony, ok, before you start distorting it."

The more I see of what Kerry has said over the years, the more I realize that he is plenty capable of exaggeration and out-right lying when it suits his purpose. Take for example his stating over the years that he "spent Christmas eve of 1968 in Cambodia". He has said this over and over since the 1970's generally when he wanted to make a point about clandestine activities of the USG.

Yet now we find that he and his boat were no where near the Cambodian border on that night. He was a full 50 miles from the Cambodian border on Christmas Eve of 1968. Even his Swift Boat compatriots who generally support him will not attest to this fabrication of Kerry's. If a person would lie about something that did not happen, then he is clearly capable of lying about other things that did not happen such as his eligible for medals and his Senate testimony that all Vietnan veterans committed war crimes.

As an officer in the U.S. military, you do not make up lies out of whole cloth like being in Cambodia when you clearly were not. What we have here is a serial liar.
