The Clown Show Continues

Matthew Yglesias gives his view of the Committee on the Present Danger:

matthew: More CPD: CPD is some kind of mish-mash of Likud front and clown show and it's a bit unclear how much of each. But who's the target?... [What] are the Committee's real goals?... On the one hand, they don't want to invade Iran. On the other hand, they want to broaden the war on terrorism to include Hezbollah and its state sponsors. So either they do want to invade Iran, or else they want to invade Syria, or else they haven't actually thought about this. Meanwhile, what would broadening the war to include Hamas and Islamic Jihad entail? Are we going to literally put US troops into the West Bank to do the [Likud's] dirty work for them?... At the moment I lean strongly toward thinking that this is all just a clown show.

Brad is obviously not pandering to 1 in 165 of his web-viewers, but instead is chumming for web-trolls, hopeing to stir up a feeding frenzy.

Some basic demographics: the majority of web users are educated, employed, English-speaking Anglo-Saxon race … certainly the majority of those Brad DeLong hopes to reach. Further, the majority only have a high-school education (5% 8th grade, 75% high school, 20% college). Most are between 18 and 40 years of age, single or married without children, and 31.3% female versus 68.7% male. They know nothing of Likud.

Of Brad's potential web-viewers, only 1 in 55 are Jewish. Of these, only 1 in 3 would have even the barest knowledge of Likud, CPD and Israeli state-sponsored terrorism strategies.

Far better for Brad to never, ever speak those bloody words "Likud", "Mossad" or "Sharon". Like cannibal Jeffrey Daumer, let them slide darkly off into the maelstrom of evil, "entwined bodies spiralling gently down, palimpid in death, fading, dappled in sun and shadow, on down in a slow gyre". (Peter Torbay, "Trinidad Blue")

Posted by: Tante Aime at August 25, 2004 01:34 PM

Brad's readership may not be a representative unbiased sample of web users...

In any case, as a university professor, the purpose of Brad's life is, in part at least, to enlighten some young minds about things they had little clue about prior to meeting him.

Posted by: Jean-Philippe Stijns at August 25, 2004 01:45 PM

J-P:

Brad would do far better, then, as an economics professor to contextualize state-sponsored terrorism, using the history of American and Israeli co-involvement and our free grants of military and indirect aid to Israel, some $5 BILLION a year, which is currently being used as offset capital for construction of the Zionist Apartheid Wall, and creates a two-way pipeline directly back to the Executive Branch in WADC, and their embedded proto-Zionist strategizers.

http://www.wrmea.com/html/usaidtoisrael0001.htm

To talk about CPD and Likud without preface or context is not the way of the sensei, unless Brad's just opening up a chat room to flamers.

Which makes my point....QED.

Letter to John Kerry

W STRIKES BACK!

http://georgewbush.com/KerryMediaCenter/Read.aspx?ID=3364

August 25, 2004

Senator John Kerry 304 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Kerry,

We are pleased to welcome your campaign representatives to Texas today. We honor all our veterans, all whom have worn the uniform and served our country. We also honor the military and National Guard troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan today. We are very proud of all of them and believe they deserve our full support.

That’s why so many veterans are troubled by your vote AGAINST funding for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, after you voted FOR sending them into battle. And that’s why we are so concerned about the comments you made AFTER you came home from Vietnam. You accused your fellow veterans of terrible atrocities – and, to this day, you have never apologized. Even last night, you claimed to be proud of your post-war condemnation of our actions.

We’re proud of our service in Vietnam. We served honorably in Vietnam and we were deeply hurt and offended by your comments when you came home.

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t build your convention and much of your campaign around your service in Vietnam, and then try to say that only those veterans who agree with you have a right to speak up. There is no double standard for our right to free speech. We all earned it.

You said in 1992 “we do not need to divide America over who served and how.” Yet you and your surrogates continue to criticize President Bush for his service as a fighter pilot in the National Guard.

We are veterans too – and proud to support President Bush. He’s...

Tante-
I fail to see the point you're trying to make. I would guess that most of this blog's readers are already quite knowledgeable of world affairs. Those who are not knowledgeable of world affairs or politics in general are unlikely to have even heard of this site. Those who are interested in learning more about world affairs will most likely look to different sources (the BBC, The New York Times, etc.).

And while I oppose Israel's West Bank barrier in its current form, I'd avoid using rhetoric like "embedded proto-Zionist strategizers" and "Zionist Apartheid Wall." It's likely to be construed as conspiratorial, if not anti-Semitic.

Plus, we citizens of British descent prefer not to be known as "the Anglo-Saxon race." The more dignified "whitey" suits us fine, thank you much ;-)

Posted by: Brad Reed at August 25, 2004 02:33 PM

Adrian. That letter is, to put it mildly, totally f---ing stupid.

Let's pick apart some of the more egregious claims:

1.) "We also honor the military and National Guard troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan today. We are very proud of all of them and believe they deserve our full support. That’s why so many veterans are troubled by your vote AGAINST funding for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, after you voted FOR sending them into battle."

Yes, Kerry voted against the bill that Bush himself threatened to veto if rebuilding funds were converted to loans. You can read all about it right here:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/10/30/politics/main580877.shtml

2.) "And that’s why we are so concerned about the comments you made AFTER you came home from Vietnam. You accused your fellow veterans of terrible atrocities – and, to this day, you have never apologized. Even last night, you claimed to be proud of your post-war condemnation of our actions."

What the Swift Boat Vets ads don't tell you is that when Kerry said "they raped women, cut off arms, etc.", he was conveying stories told to him by other veterans. While some of those vets' stories were later discredited (and I'll admit Kerry should have checked on them before relaying them on to the Senate), it is beyond doubt that many, many attrocities were committed in Vietnam. Check here for more:

http://www.factcheck.org/article.aspx?docID=244

3.) "You can’t have it both ways. You can’t build your convention and much of your campaign around your service in Vietnam, and then try to say that only those veterans who agree with you have a right to speak up. There is no double standard for our right to free speech. We all earned it."

True, although when people are blatantly making s--- up, you have every right to fight back against them and call on others to condemn the smear. The Swifties can speak up all they want. But they should be seen for what they are: a partisan hit job.

4.) "You said in 1992 'we do not need to divide America over who served and how.' Yet you and your surrogates continue to criticize President Bush for his service as a fighter pilot in the National Guard."

Ah yes. The MoveOn.org ad that Kerry specifically called "inappropriate."

Posted by: Brad Reed at August 25, 2004 02:56 PM

Silly Matt. They DO want to invade Syria, or destabilize it and get a more mallaeble puppet in ther. They DO want -- feasible or not -- surgical strikes on Iran. And they don't have to sit in for Israel in the West Bank. Israel has already put the Palestinians on self-destruct, and will find every opportunity, especially in the dust and smoke of US actions, to finish the job themselves.

I say finish. But then we'll be right back where we started, but worse -- with 100 million Al Qaeda recruits.

Posted by: paulo at August 25, 2004 03:56 PM

I remember reading somewhere that Tom Clancy went to hear the Wolfowitz speak and walked out asking people, "Is he on our side?"

A good question for all the neocons and their weird reverse-domino theory that if we attack all nations, they will all fall, one after another, into democracy.

Posted by: Diana at August 25, 2004 04:51 PM

I think I know what Tante is trying to get at.

This is not a "clown show".

The fact is that many of the neocons are Jews that are active in the Isreali defense industry and Defense Ministry.

It's as if far right US and far right Isreal have interlocking boards.

And then you have the right wing fundementalists who long for Armmegedon and the end of times.

Of course, Brad, we who are educated and wordly know all about this.

Still, the topic is worth discussing because it is relevant to what what might result from another four years of Bush.

I, for one, do not think that Isreal should be calling our foreign policy shots at all, let alone to the extent they have been.

A different administration might come to see strong alliance with Isreal as being more of a liability than an asset.

And, no, discussing the topic in a serious and rational manner should not be in any way construed to be anti semitic.

Posted by: avedis at August 25, 2004 05:45 PM

The latest from Adrian Spidle is direct from the Bush campaign website, check it out. It would seem that Mr Bush is not distancing himself from the Shifties. Of course, this is standard Bush campaign tactic. Since Bush has few positives in his record he can run on, he has to tear down his opponent with a smear campaign full of lies to try to level the playing field. GHW Bush did that in his campaigns against Reagan, Dukakis and Clinton. GW Bush did that against Gore and is trying the same MO against Kerry.

This creates problems for the opponent even if he defeats Bush. Remember that the Whitewater non-scandal came directly out of the Bush campaign opposition research and was not used to smear Clinton only because the FBI refused to cooperate. The Clinton administration was hounded by this non-scandal throughout. Fortunately, Clinton's experience will be useful to Kerry when he wins in November.

The TV media likes smear campaigns because it improves their ratings. Unless the Democrats find a way to make the media pay in the pocketbook for airing this garbage it will continue. It is time to start discussing breaking up the monopoly on the airwaves by the big conglomerates and rearranging the media market to allow more players.

Posted by: bakho at August 25, 2004 05:55 PM

They are sticking their nose where the money is. DOD is one of the biggest pots of money in the budget. CPD is little more than a lobbying group They are positioned to attract lots of corporate money from people looking for a piece of the pie or to expand the pie into an area that they can exploit. Some of the members have their pet policies, but ultimately it is all about getting money.

Posted by: bakho at August 25, 2004 05:58 PM

"Some of the members have their pet policies, but ultimately it is all about getting money."

Sure, of course. The problem is that ideas, even half baked/half hearted ones, have a way of gaining a life of their own. Especially when your political and capitalistic pandering is cloaked in the language of militaristic adventurism against mortal enemies.

Confrontational militaristic ideas + big money weapons deals + political unrest with neighboring countries + oil = war.

Posted by: avedis at August 25, 2004 06:14 PM

Diana: you give Clany too much credit for intelligence. Clancy has been on "invade Iraq mode" since well before 9/11, fed by the cruder of the neocons, and just after he was on TV with, figuratively, blood and saliva flowing from his mouth saying how we should bomb the fuck out of Iraq and the whole region. Even Wolfowitz was embarrassed. Good spy books aside, Clancy is a lunatic.

Posted by: paulo at August 25, 2004 07:29 PM

Yo' Brad, so... exactly where is it in your tirade that you show what Kerry said to be false?

Posted by: bill at August 25, 2004 07:34 PM

Do NOT feed the Trolls. The topic of this thread is the quippet from Yglesias' site about the CPD and Likud.

That said, whenever I think about the situation in Israel-Palestine I think about how I would feel if I were either a proud Israeli or a proud Palestinian embedded in this zero-sum conflict. Fairly hopeless and probably radicalized, on either case.

However, the fact remains that Israel remains the only western-style democracy in the Middle East, and is therefore a natural ally of the US and the west irrespective of everything else. That we should be doing much more to try to resolve the fundamentals of the conflict is absolutely true- anything else feeds into the ultra-right hardline fantasies of a duel to the death and mass genocide.

Posted by: non economist at August 25, 2004 09:19 PM

Just an interesting coincidence -- the two chairs of the CPD, Mssrs Kyl and Lieberman, have just been selected to be members of the bipartisan Senate committee on intelligence reform.

A payday loans secured by a personal check - such as a payday loan - is very expensive credit. Let's say you write a personal check for $115 to borrow $100 in quick cash for up to 14 days. The check casher or payday lender agrees to hold the check until your next payday loan cash. At that time, depending on the particular plan, the lender deposits the check, you redeem the check by paying the $115 in cash, or you roll-over the check by paying a fee to extend the payday loans for another two weeks. In this example, the cost of the initial loan is a $15 finance charge and 391 percent APR. If you roll-over the loan three times, the finance charge would climb to $60 to borrow $100 payday loan cash advance.
