Brad DeLong Gets Shriller

In case you did not know, President Bush does not believe that we can win the war on terror:

Mark A. R. Kleiman: : President Bush, who doesn't think America can win the war on terror.

In fact, as the Poor Man reminds us, he's not even going to try:

The Poor Man: The Chronic: Terror is bigger than one person. And he's [Osama bin Laden's] just -- he's a person who's now been marginalized. His network is -- his host government has been destroyed. He's the ultimate parasite who found weakness, exploited it, and met his match. He is -- as I've mentioned in my speeches, I do mention the fact that this is a fellow who is willing to commit youngsters to their death, and he himself tries to hide -- if, in fact, he's hiding at all. So I don't know where he is. You know, I just don't spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. . . . I truly am not that concerned about him.

President George W. Bush 3/13/2002

I want a president who is "concerned" about Osama bin Laden--and about all the other members of Al Qaeda--every single day of every year.

Guys, OBL is dead.

Posted by: am at August 31, 2004 05:55 PM

I certainly hope so. But I want to see it...

Posted by: Brad DeLong at August 31, 2004 06:03 PM

I think it is not helpful for Bush's opponents to attack him by parsing his remarks and displaying his semantic and logical inconsistencies. To the undecided voters such arguments will sound like academic quibbling, I would guess. (I'm only guessing, of course. How the hell would I know how anyone could even consider Bush to be an acceptable president?) I would recommend that we focus our attention on Bush's abysmal record in both the domestic and foreign spheres. The right wing is quite effective in focussing on a few key points which they hammer home ad nauseum. Let's steal a page or two from their playbook. Bush's foreign policy is reckless and ineffective; consequently we are losing allies, gaining enemies, and becoming less safe. Bush is a hazard to America. His domestic policies have failed equally; thus we have lost jobs, real wages have stagnated, and economic issues like the affordability of health care and the viability of Social Security and Medicare have not been addressed. Now, repeat.

Posted by: tedb at August 31, 2004 07:58 PM

Without the body, to all intents and purposes OBL should be treated if he is still alive. Since there is an argument that OBL was an artefact of the political struggle of progressive vs conservative forces in Saudi Arabia, OBL and Al Qaeda should be a top five concern of any Western Political Leader.

Posted by: Eunoia23 at August 31, 2004 08:01 PM

"I do mention the fact that this is a fellow who is willing to commit youngsters to their death, and he himself tries to hide"

I never made the connection before, but does this describe someone else we know?

Posted by: flory at August 31, 2004 08:11 PM

I'd like to see it, too, but I'd also like to see some evidence that Kerry/Democrats/the press (or at least *one* of those three entities) is going to react by asking, "What took you so goddamn long?" because it's not implausible that OBL will be produced, in one form or another, just in time to make swing voters think, "Gee, it looks like Bush really has done something in the war on terror!"

We need people to hammer the point that every day OBL isn't caught, every day that a "voluntary" program to secure American chemical plants languishes, every day that nuclear facilities in Iran and North Korea aren't being inspected or at least observed, every day that we spend wondering when some nuclear material that Nunn-Lugar should have taken off the market will come home to roost, is a day that makes a lie of George W. Bush's claims to be an effective leader, to be waging a plausible war on terror, and to deserve reelection instead of impeachment for being such a goddamn slacker when it comes to actually trying to keep America safe*. The days compound and build a certain momentum; so do the lies.

*And I'm not even sure they're *trying* to keep us all that safe any more -- why else would they fight so hard to argue that the Spanish vote against Aznar was submission to the terrorists? That spin bore an undercurrent of jealousy, that someone had taken a tool out of their toolbox, and by using it, rendered it less effective, should anyone want to use it again.

Posted by: Chris at August 31, 2004 08:14 PM

Flory's absolutely right -- I think that was my little league coach's mantra.

No, I didn't grow up in Texas. Why do you ask?

Posted by: Chris at August 31, 2004 08:16 PM

Folks, 9/11 was carried out by criminals -- well-funded and well-organized, yes, but criminals, not soldiers in some war. Arguably, agents of the drug lords in Colombia have killed more Americans and caused as much property loss in the US as al-Qaeda has. I want a president who is "concerned" about criminals every day -- investigate, interdict, seize their assets, cooperate with other countries. But I don't care if he/she worries about OBL every day any more than if he/she worries about Luis Bustamante.

Posted by: Michael Cain at August 31, 2004 08:17 PM

Ted's right - the same people who nod approvingly when Cheney says Kerry is a wuss for wanting to fight a "sensitive" war, even though Cheney has used that exact word, in contexts that are for all practical purposes identical are *not* going to be persuaded by our ability to find something dumb or inconsistent Bush says. Those people insist on maintaining a double standard for Bush (for reasons I can't fathom), and I think we're shoveling sand against the tide to spend too much time pointing out Bush's inconsistencies and/or hypocrisies. Plus, there are too goddamn many of them.

My vote, instead, is for harsh sarcasm: if someone mentions the SBVfT, tell them that you're sure Kerry's so manipulative, he actually went and crossed Bush's name off the records and wrote his own name into them, broke into his house and stole his medals to throw over the WH fence, and that Jim Rassmann's glasses must've fallen off in the water, because it was clearly a wiry young Texan on that Swift Boat who pulled him out of the bullet-churning water. Then roll your eyes. If they still don't believe you, tell them that you agree with SBVfT, that Kerry was remiss in testifying about what other soldiers said about Viet Nam, and that you're *SURE* we would have won if only we'd been allowed to commit *MORE* war-crime-like activities, because they would have been both helpful to the cause *AND* honorable things to ask more young American troops to do -- after all, *THAT* is what SBVfT is implicitly arguing. Ask them how many random innocent people they'd kill to protect their country from a distant and unrelated threat, and then call them communist pussies for giving a number that's too low (/shrill).

Posted by: Chris at August 31, 2004 08:27 PM

The War on Terror is like the War on Burglary. The war will never be "won" - in the sense that we will never be able to conquer all terrorists or burglars as we were able to conquer all of the government agents of the Third Reich or Grenada. After bands of terrorists and burglars are apprehended, new ones will eventually rise - at a rate diametrically opposite to the disincentive provided by our resolve and action in response to such activity.

Posted by: Alan K. Henderson at August 31, 2004 09:30 PM

"If they still don't believe you, tell them that you agree with SBVfT, that Kerry was remiss in testifying about what other soldiers said about Viet Nam, and that you're *SURE* we would have won if only we'd been allowed to commit *MORE* war-crime-like activities, because they would have been both helpful to the cause *AND* honorable things to ask more young American troops to do -- after all, *THAT* is what SBVfT is implicitly arguing."

Now, I am thinking that they may be right not to concede Vietnam. As the joke goes among Arabs, how do you say Vietnam in Arabic? Iraq. So, if they concede Vietnam was a crazy adventure, so do they concede about Iraq. That would also explain all the parallels they're trying to draw between the cold war and Iraq. But then again, I may be putting too much rationality in what may just be Orwellian double-speak.

Posted by: Jean-Philippe Stijns at August 31, 2004 09:38 PM

The plain fact is that Osama bin Laden declared war on America. Then he killed Americans on American soil. That is close enough to war to suit me. Bush failed to punish bin Laden. He failed the only important thing. And worse, he failed in obvious ways: he sent warlords out to catch bin Laden at Tora Bora, when we had already proved that the warlords would only act for money. And he lost focus on bin Laden and went looking for a paper tiger to knock over. Bush failed us. He has to go.

Posted by: masaccio at August 31, 2004 09:55 PM

masaccio:

The Chinese government declared war against the running dogs of capitalism and we're still doing a brusque business with them thirty years later. North Korea's government repeatedly blackmails the US with the threat of attacks against Japan, our ally, which would be an act of war. Bush, like Clinton, only more ineptly, is paying it.

Iraq had nothing whatsoever to do with Osama.

Bush inferred to Matt Lowry yesterday that the war against terror can't be won, and with it, our invasion and occupation of Iraq after ten years of saturation bombing, which is really just the Houston cartel stepping on the Iraq cartel to keep the price of oil high.

"I don't think you can win it. But I think you can create conditions so that the - those who use terror as a tool are less acceptable in parts of the world." GWBush, August 30th, 2004

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uselections2004/story/0,13918,1293995,00.html

He might as well have said, "But I think you can create conditions so that the low price of crude oil is less available in most of the world."

Somebody blew up the Iraqi pipelines yesterday and stopped the flow of oil, just as the price of crude had started to slip south of $48.

Remember, anything over $25/bbl is pure profit, that's the price the Saudi's have set. And 76 million barrels per day is flowing worldwide. That's an incredible $1.9 B/day profit, or $3/4 TRILLION US dollars per year, pure profit.

Actually higher, since Iraqi crude is produced somewhere between $12-$15/bbl, not counting US tax-paid protection racket that isn't working.

Or is it!?

I swear you could smack people upside the head with an oily mackerel, and they'd tell you how nice a day it is, as long as it's a democracy.

Discretionary Federal budget spending and crude oil profits are the twin gods Lucre and Mammon.

Of course not, but it would be helpful to attack him for his waffling.

"I think it is not helpful for Bush's opponents to attack him by parsing his remarks and displaying his semantic and logical inconsistencies. To the undecided voters such arguments will sound like academic quibbling"

If that's true, why do the R's spend so much time and effort parsing Kerry's remarks and attacking him for semantic and logical inconsistencies (even where none really exist)?

Posted by: rea at September 1, 2004 08:14 AM

I agree with Tante Aime. Iraq has become a once in a lifetime opportunity for certain people in the right business (oil) or having right connections (contractors for Iraqi "reconstruction"), I really start to think a war with Iran is more than a small probability if Bush gets another four years. Some people are getting very rich in the past one and half years ...

Posted by: pat at September 1, 2004 09:28 AM

If Bush were to wage a war on terrorists, he would need to pay for it. It would crowd out the tax cuts and the Iraqi adventures.

Posted by: Dave M at September 1, 2004 02:34 PM

"If that's true, why do the R's spend so much time and effort parsing Kerry's remarks and attacking him for semantic and logical inconsistencies (even where none really exist)?"

Rea, I think the answer is that the Repugnants can get away with quibbling and lying because they have the dittohead echo chamber and the media allows it. Recall how the media was an accomplice in perpetuating any cheapshot, false criticism of Gore. I don't think the media will allow the Dems to get much mileage out of such attacks. We can sure try...as long as we don't let the arguments stray from a focus on Bush's failed domestic and foreign policies. Bush is not making us safe; the weak economy is punishing the working class. Repeat.
