Surely this must be some machine-generated parody of an actual book review. I don't believe that a human being could actually spew forth so much drivel without being overcome by its complete inanity.

I think the piece can be summed thusly. Now that all the great French intellectuals are dead, Liberalism has at last been able to triumph. The new french intellectuals of this new epoch aren't anywhere near those of the last, but they're probably right. Now France can become 'a normal democratic society, purged of radical doctrines and theatrical conflicts. France had now found its equilibrium in a sober centre."
I think Brad has been right in past posts. Anderson was probably never a Marxist, even if he thought he was. If he ever was one, he's certainly not putting up a big defense today (even though he can't resist a few snide side-remarks about how the new French intellectuals have nothing to say about the social and economic determinants of institutions and instead revel in celebrations of French ceremonies and personalities).

Roughly: first he meanders on about nobody understanding the French. That is, the French talk about themselves a great deal but no one else does and no one else understands them, not even the British, so essentially, his article might be a bit hit and miss.

Then he explains that France is evidently suffering from what Jimmy Carter called 'Malaise'.
(What with English making in-roads in trade and film and whatnot.)

Then he outlines how the British how a very British decline into mediocrity after the war. (No. Really.) Whereas the French underwent a really spiffy golden age of sorts from '45 to '68. (Under a regime that was semi-protectionist and determinedly nationalist. With an education system that was elitist.)

Then '68 came along and the education system went down the toilet. The economy went down the toilet. And the socialists and the communists seemed to be inevitably on the rise.

So the neo-liberals (just called liberals in France) came along and started screaming about how the communists sucked, in the face of a possible communist triumph. And the neo-liberals won. (But, gosh, Booboo, at what price?) Unfortunately that destroyed the 'Revolution' of '68 and that destruction in turn led to the Revolution of 1789 being redefined from a Jacobin revolution to a (neo-)Liberal revolution and thus the commies were defeated. And thus, France became a 'bourgeois' democracy and now everything sucks.

Thus the books he is 'reviewing' which evidently are proof of greed and evil.

Nowhere does he say the (communist) Left should have won, but he strongly implies that the Revolution went down the toilet and France has gone with it. Anyways, he misses it.

It's saying that Frances is an unfathomable storm of such force with such volumes of sloughing rain and blowhard tendencies that it will flood our not so liberal lands and be remembered by Floridians for at least a week. The weather, it's trying to say, is an ominous sign of historical note.

To decode the dialect, it helps to change the "ou"s to "o"s.

Hm...actually, doesn't help all that much.

Never use a big word when a dimunitive one will do. ^_^

Come now. There have been obscure articles written before and the LRB has published a few of them, but Anderson's is not one of them. It may be that it's easier to read on paper, where you can readily look back at previous paragraphs, than on screen.

The real question is Is he right? He piles an awful lot on the failure of '68. And his loathing for BHL is clearly over the top.

But he's right that secular anti-communism came late to France and I think his estimate of its impact is just. I would put more weight on Mitterand's personal failings in judging his presidency, though.

But it was an interesting article, meriting its lead position in the issue. Nothing to sneer at.

"logomachy?" That is not a word even an educated, even a well-educated, person can be expected to know (or use). And the construction of the article is sloppy, too--we find out that the difficulty of writing about France is "in the first instance" the volume of stuff written about France by smart and literary French people, but it's not for a long time thereafter that we come to the "second instance," which is that British people don't think about real France, but about the France they think they know.

Scholarly and literary magazines and journals shouldn't adopt style guidelines from Business Writing Courses, but neither should they confuse difficulty with profundity. There is nothing in that article that requires the ornateness of its style.

Roughly transcribed we have:

Thus the fact that there is a lot of quality french literature is just a matter of mind numbing numbers.

I skimmed the piece a bit, but could not stand much. But having lived in France for a significant period, and read, seen and heard the discourse of their intelligentsia, I think it fair to say that the reviewer has come to resemble the books and society he reviews. Sort of like a dog owner coming to resemble a dog.

Please note, I like France and its people very much. It is just the many poseurs in public life who are hard to take.

Perry Anderson's piece was of course an absolutely brilliant and illuminating account of particular strands in French intellectual life. It expands our vocabulary - I had to look up degringolade, so thanks Perry. And best of all - Part 2 still to come. Read, enjoy, learn, think...

The French have both feet solidly planted in thin air.

That's the gist of it, I think.

Take bobbyp's summary and add the following sentence:

The best way to understand (if you can want to do so) that article is merely to translate the first sentence of each paragraph. The rest of each paragraph appears to expound and pontificate the opening sentence.

The rest of the article can be summarized sort of like:
The British empire faded away after the war. So did the French empire, but they didn't have quite so far to fall. And then there was deGaulle, wow, was he great or something. Culture and intellectualism were real important to the French, even more than politics and economics.

All it really needs is to add:
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

For a good thirty years, Anderson has written pompously, petulantly, repetitively, and ignorantly about France, the French, and French intellectual culture. Doing so has become his life's mission--so much so that the mission itself may be said to survive the man's claims to critical intelligence. I ascribe his mission to an intellectual wound: Anderson was wounded, some thirty -odd years ago, by the energetic and effervescent attentions paid by other English Marxists to the French Marxism of the sixties and seventies (Louis Althusser is the most prominent figure in question here).

The style of Anderson's article says it all: as his somewhat hysterical recourse to name-dropping--or is name parading?--and to inflationary, anecdotal narrative would suggest, he has no inclination or capacity whatsover to think dialectically. And while this "dyslexia" is not in itself a "bad thing," it certainly prevents Anderson from being able to read French theoretical works (Marxist or otherwise) written over the past sixty years--strongly marked, as they generally are, by a deep investment in Kant and Hegel. Anderson, therefore, stopped counting in English Marxist circles a long, long time ago.... As to whether or not France still counts--this, of course, is a different question entirely, and one that each of us will have to address on his or her own.

Well, I notice that those "high standards of statistical rigor, analytic intelligence, and literary elegance" didn't stop huge numbers of their intellectuals from falling hook, line and sinker for the Soviet dictatorship (although one can perhaps see why Anderson might be reluctant to mention this fact). You don't have to be Tom Delay to conclude that the French -- like the inhabitants of most countries -- have a somewhat inflated opinion of themselves, no matter how solemnly they claim to worship pure Reason.

Well, Bruce Moomaw, some French intellectuals have an inflated opinion of themselves, and some do not. As for those "huge numbers" of intellectuals "falling hook, line and sinker for the Soveit dictatorship," you really ought to ask yourself who exactly was pro-Soviet, and when, and why (and yes, there were domestic calculations at work in all these foreign policy affiliations, as usual). Have you everl really read a word of these folks? If you had, you'd never be caught saying that the "French claim to worship pure Reason". No, they don't "worship pure Reason," they merely study "The Critique of Pure Reason" by Kant, and if you don't allow for the difference between studying something and worshiping it, then you're just coming on like Tom DeLay, for whom acts of reading are only acts of worship--a "fundamentalism" (your own, perhaps?) that you willingly project upon the French.

But that's not the point of Brad's post: Brad just wanted to know what sense, if any, could be made of Anderson's pronouncements on French writers in the sixties and seventies (long after the French Communists--not to mention the non-Communist intellectuals--had broken with the Soviet Union). And the answer is very simple: Anderson really can't read what those folks in the sixties and seventies were writing. He lacks the competence to do so. He isn't alone in lacking it, and he isn't alone in denying that such an incompetence leads to some familiar academic problems. Anderson can't read Althusser--and he resents those of his colleagues who expect him to be able to do so. This is a familiar academic situation, wouldn't you say?

"France is a difficult place for a foreigner to write about, first of all because any such writing competes with the great amount of writing the French produce about themselves. Seventy titles on the electoral campaign of Spring 2002. Two hundred books on Mitterand, and 300 on De Gaul. This includes a large amount of dross, of course. But these are not merely idle words. The best writing about France by the French is distinguished by high standards of statistical rigor, analytic intelligence and literary elegance. Confronted with this mass of self-description, what can the alien voice hope to add? Perhaps the anthropological advantages of an outsider's point of view, Lévi-Strauss's "distant look."

And so on. I used to make a game out of translating pretentious lit-speak into clear English. But it gets old quick.

Okay; to my original translation of Anderson's paragraph into English, I need to add one word:
"The French sure like to talk about themselves a lot, but this doesn't NECESSARILY mean they're accurate."

Face it - you think you're okay, but you've absorbed every philistine anti-French thought put out by the current US regime. You're not.... Americans are you?

C'mon Brad... no one needs explain the French narcissistic ethic: they swim in their own reflection pool, drink their wine in country, bake and eat their own bread and foodstuffs; they need us not except as inferior examples of homo sapiens sapiens. C'est vrai.

Brad DeLong writes, on Crooked Timber:

That is a rather tendentious reading of the two texts, but it is not still half as problematic as the claim that a self-avowed Marxist Perry Anderson completely misunderstood himself. The problem seems to be Brad's rather narrow view of what constitutes Marxism [some variant of the earlier Gerry Cohen's reductionism?], such that in the world of Marxism and Weberianism, never the two shall meet. Mr. DeLong meet Mr. Lukacs...
