I was hearing all this talk on NPR about Bush's record today.

Based on this: "... I ordered that 1st Lt. Bush be suspended from flight status due to failure to perform to USAF/TexANG standards and failure to meet annual physical examination (flight) as ordered.", how did he get an "honorable discharge"?

ronb, where have you been? The GOP demanded -- demanded! -- that Kerry release all his military records. To which the Kerry campaign chuckled and said, "Okay, here you go." I haven't visited myself, but word is the records are vastly more extensive and comprehensive, and can be found on the Kerry website.

Bush the First was the sounder politician of the two: in the 1992 campaign, his people wanted to make a federal case out of Clinton's career as a womanizer, but then word came back from the Clinton camp that they could, and would, paint Bush with the same brush if invited to do so. Both sides then forbore to fire away. Not so with Bush the Second: his handlers just couldnt refrain from unleashing those Swift Boat dogs. And now they pay, and seem a bit discomposed by the whole process, not to say a bit surprised. I hold their boss responsible for this: he dumbs down every single person who comes near him--his hit men as well as his household.

The Dems won't get enough traction just focusing on Bush's service.

It's *crucial* that they link Bush's dereliction of duty in 1972 to his dereliction of duty in August 2001 - his decision to take his full vacation after being presented with the August 6 PDB warning about Al Qaeda.

Connecting the service record and his lackadaisical performance as president establishes a lifetime character flaw, and makes the Guard service highly relevant to today's events.

If this isn't done, the GOP can just paint it as ancient history, a non-issue because Bush grew up and changed his ways. I think most people will accept that.

The GOP would have a harder time making a substantive defense against an argument that connected his guard performance to his August 01 vacation.

Bush shirked his duty in 1972, and he shirked in August of 2001. This connection *must* be made for the public, and pounded on again and again.

The Dems aren't going to get this chance again before the election. If they don't capitalize on it now, to best effect, the opportunity is lost.

Brad, if you can, could you pass this comment on to anyone you think would be able to act on it?

I have to confess that I find this all enormously amusing. As my mother said back during Watergate, "To hell with all that nonsense about this being a 'great national tragedy'. My fellow Americans, George Bush has had a lot of fun attacking me over how I voted on his 87 billion dollar spending request for the Iraq War. He thinks it's a big laugh line. But he's laughing all the way to the bank, with YOUR grandchildren's money.

My position has been perfectly clear all along:

No. 1: I support spending whatever it takes to get the job done in Iraq.

No. 2: I DEMAND that we pay for it honestly by asking the wealthiest Americans to give back just SOME of the enormous tax breaks Bush gave them.

Completely agree with Jon H. (elaborations below are mine, not his!)

The relevance of all this paper-wrangling is not in the specific details, but that these separate incidents of 30 yrs ago show just how these two people--I am loathe to refer to "Bush" as a "man" but I will begrudgingly admit him to the species--developed their distinctly different characters and personalities which have led them through life to this (and future) days.

John Kerry, opposed to the war, nevertheless signed on and fought honorably and in dangerous situations. He accepted the responsibilities of an American citizen, even though he was a child of privilege.

George Wrong Bush, opposed to having his worthless ass shot off, apparently unaware of all the good drugs he could have scored in 'Nam, finagled a position into the NG, purportedly achieved the lowest possible score to enable him to become a pilot like his father (what are the chances he could achieve precisely the lowest possible score? I'd say they are much higher that he DID NOT achieve this score, but was graded on the 'curve' weighted by Daddy's influence), then deserted his duty to my country (and yes, I'm old enough that I paid taxes which paid for his training). This blatant desertion makes him a traitor during time of war, for which crime he should be given a fair trial then hanged as soon as possible.

What amazes me is that it took 5 years for the media to unearth these memos. How did CBS do it?

How did CBS do it? With a lot of prodding from the Kerry campaign. Kerry is a fighter, and I'm sure his staff worked hard to unearth documents and point media outlets towards them.

The New Republic's appraisal of the Killian memos makes Bush's conduct look even more nauseating than it appeared before.

Killian, Bush's Texas National Guard squadron commander. These memos tell a fascinating story about the struggle of a by-the-book commander caught between a self-important young pilot trying to cut corners and wiggle out of the rest of his Guard commitment, and superiors who seem all to willing to let the privileged son of a Texas VIP bend the rules.

This is the first time any official document has reported that Bush was suspended for any reason other than simply missing his physical. It's also clear in this memo that Bush has completely abandoned the idea of ever flying again. 'Officer has made no attempt to meet his training certification or flight physical,' the memo says. Incredibly, Killian recommends that the Texas spot abandoned by Bush -- the one that with Barnes's help Bush had won by leapfrogging ahead of hundreds of other applicants -- be filled by a pilot returning from combat in Vietnam. Not only did someone else get shipped off to Vietnam when Bush landed his Guard duty, but once Bush was bored with flying and abandoned his spot, a pilot returning from Vietnam was forced to replace him.

"In the final Killian memo, the one with the subject line 'CYA' (cover your ass), the commander makes cryptic references to a struggle with his superiors over how much slack to cut Bush, who hadn't been observed in Texas for a year. 'Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges more about Bush. I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job,' Killian writes. According to the Associated Press, Staudt and Hodges are Waleter B. Staudt, the commander of the Texas National Guard at the time, and Lieutenant Colonel Bobby Hodges, one of Bush's superiors. Staudt, Killian wrote, was 'pushing to sugar-coat' the evaluation. Killian complains that Bush wasn't around and there's no word from Alabama about what he's been doing. He makes a small concession to the pressure he's feeling from his bosses but refuses a full coverup for Bush. 'I'll backdate,' he writes, 'but won't rate.' "

Every new piece of information obtained supports the claim that Bush used influence to get into the guard and then went AWOL.

Every new piece of information obtained contradicts the claims made by the Swift Boat veterans for Bush.

It is now abundantly clear that the Bush campaign set up the swift boat veterans as a way to neutralize the AWOL allegations. They knew that worse would come out.

Character matters, people who lie about little things are certain to lie when it comes to big things. The coverup of Bush's service in the national guard is merely a smaller scale version of the coverup over Bush's actions on 9-11 and the lies he told to start the war with Iraq.

So the question I want to hear at the daily press gaggle--repeatedly, until it's answered satisfactorily--is, "Why did the President fail to follow a direct order?"

Regarding forgeries -- you need to consider what the imaging process in Adobe (converting an old document to a PDF file) does to the detail of the document. OCR is wonderful and all that, but ... you can't look at a PDF and react as if you've got a real document, or even a photograph of the document. The curly quotes, the "thorn" (th) character, and all -- are you SURE that Adobe didn't modify the original type?

That said...

Bush joined the Reserves, served in CONUS, and was discharged ahead of time.

Kerry joined the Reserves, was sent O'CONUS, and was discharged ... strangely belatedly. He was in the "Standby Reserves" while conducting unauthorized treaty negotiations with the Vietnamese in Paris in 1971. He was a Navy Officer while testifying before Congress about wartime atrocities. He was transferred to the inactive "Ready Reserves" two years AFTER returning from Vietnam and was not honorably discharged to civilian life until 1978. It's almost as if the Navy had been withholding the paperwork for some squirrelly reason.

I agree with Jon H, but would also say that my own legal dealings with at least one federal agencies regarding FOI Act requests is that they often do dribble out documents. If in fact a FOI Act request(s) was/were the means used to obtain some or all of these documents, then there's an administrative process to go through, and if the requester believes the agency has not fully responded to the request for docs then the requester can file suit in federal court. One favorite ploy of one agency (back in the '80's and early 90's anyway) was to release a load of documents immediately after a complaint was filed in federal court--that was so the agency could argue that no attorney fees were due to the requestor under the FOI Act "fee shifting" provision or EAJA (Equal Access to Justice Act) because both require that the requester meet certain standards (basically that the suit was required to obtain the docs and that the agency didn't have have a good rational basis to believe its complete or partial "denial" of the request was had a reasonable basis in the FOI Act regs). Perhaps for CBS or whomever, getting attorney fees awarded is not a big deal, but it can be for non-profits, individuals or organizations without ample funds for litigation.

I agree that Bush (or his cronies/advisors) have succeeded in showing a pattern of irresponsibility, callous disregard for the cost to the taxpayer of Bush actions (i.e., how much it cost to train Bush, the invasion of Iraq, etc.) and willingness to lie and smear others. It's interesting that in spite of all this evidence, a variety of news articles I've read have quoted people as saying they think Bush is "honest."

I have wondered about one aspect of this: given that Bush is known to have been a very heavy drinker during this time, with abuse of other substances very likely, how did he manage to learn how to fly? Supposedly he did well on various tests, etc. I've read that some part of the military (Air Force?) reportedly just about forced its pilots to take amphetamines so they could continue flying--I believe there was an accident in the US some years ago during some practice/patrol flights several years ago that were thought to be partly caused by overtired/drug using pilots--and that's how the forced drug use policy came out. But aren't at least commercial pilots banned having alcohol so many hours before flying? And alcohol is known to rapidly impair reflexes/response time. So could it be that Bush's good scores were a lie as well? Or is it possible that he managed to control his drinking enough to learn how to fly well? I know I've seen posts from at least one person who says he/she has an Air Force background--perhaps he/she would be able to answer this question?

Hmmm, Bush failing standards then and failing standards now. Sounds like a pattern to me.

But it isn't kerned. Also, I think before I posted something like this, I would have done the easy Google Search for "selectric proportional type". If one had done so, an obvious and screamingly useful link would have surfaced:

That came out in 1966. Yeah, a bit fancy for those days, but then again, there was also the IBM Executive series introduced in the 1940s, which also had proportional spacing. (But note that it wasn't a Selectric; just an electric typewriter.) For more info, see:

I hadn't noticed the fake looking number. My objection to the "this is kerned" argument is that it's not very well-kerned; check out the ugly spacing betwen Y and o in "You" on the first memo.

Actually, in that real document the "th" is small but not very super; not nearly as super as the fakes, and I've seen nothing else from that place or era that used proportional fonts of any kind, and this font is certainly Times Roman.

Ah, but they'll index this page, so consider your memories now to be partially on the web. :-) More seriously, I thought that by posting the link to this, somebody might have said "Oh yeah, we got some of those in surplus". The IBM Electric Executive actually pre-dates the Selectric in at least some of its versions. But that's all academic.

Yes, but the real problem was that even if some better and later and cheaper Composer had come out, you wouldn't expect a guy who was *not* a typist to be typing private memos on the thing.

I think they all are fake.

The font is very unlikely, the typerwriters required are pretty unlikely, the existence of a superscript "th" key, while not impossible, is unlikely itself and therefore *very* unlikely to be on the rare typewriter. But it gets worse. Now, I'm ignoring the stuff about "ooh, MS Word has the same margins and tab stops" because it would surprise me if it didn't. What is the truly and completely bizarre thing is the space that occurs between the number and the non-superscript "th" in several of these letters. That is just too weird; it looks wrong, I've never seen it in real typing, I wouldn't expect a bad typist to do it.. But you *do* see things like this nowadays due to the wonders of MS Word's obnoxious habit of converting stuff to superscript when it thinks it knows what you really meant. A cheesy work-around for that is to...yup, put a space in. So now it's all bad.

These are fakes, and we'll get to see Brad do his patented "strike through type" style retraction in a day or two. So now the real question is: who would do such a lame job of forging this? How could CBS not find somebody to point out the problems here? And why did the White House seem to accept the fact that they were real, but explain it away? The explanation given was really weak, and almost suggests that they were really expecting something like this to come out.

But anyway, yeah, you were right. I was hasty about this. The longer I looked at these, the clearer it became that these really and truly weren't 70s documents. I learned to type in the 70s. I even think I got to type on an IBM Executive typewriter once. But nothing I did back then looked anything like something you would pull of a laser printer these days...and that's what this sure looks like. Unless somebody pulls an IBM Executive with a very Times-Roman looking font out of storage somewhere and it has a supescript "th" key on it and something like "PROP. NATL GUARD" stenciled on the back, I'm disbelieving this in a big way.

Man, I would *not* want to be the people at 60 Minutes right around now.
