"Honorable Mention" seems to mean here "Even Better Reporters, But With Fewer Readers."

Posted by: goethean at September 27, 2004 11:39 AM

Frank Rich is many things...but "reporter" is not one of them.

Posted by: buckydentsghost at September 27, 2004 11:46 AM

Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post should have been included.

Posted by: ch2 at September 27, 2004 11:53 AM

Where'e the list of bad reporters? Or is that everyone not on this list?

Posted by: Buck at September 27, 2004 11:56 AM

Nobody from Knight-Ridder or the wire services?

Posted by: JIm Mahon at September 27, 2004 11:57 AM

Exactly. Knight-Ridder should own this list.

Posted by: JDC at September 27, 2004 11:59 AM

What's that one guy's name? You know, the guy who broke the Abu Ghraib scandal and the intelligence stovepiping at the Pentagon? The one who cast the Prince of Darkness from the Defense Policy Board?

It's something like Sheldon - or maybe Sydney.

John Stewart at number 4--Ted Koppel must be seething. Fantastic.

Posted by: Dan at September 27, 2004 01:00 PM

What does Bob Sommerby think?

Posted by: Jonathan Goldberg at September 27, 2004 01:00 PM

Sven,
I can't tell whether you were being sarcastic or not. If you really don't remember his name, it is Seymour Hersh. And he deserves to be first in the list.

Posted by: ch2 at September 27, 2004 01:29 PM

Sven, I think you are thinking of Seymour Hersh.

Posted by: Blake at September 27, 2004 01:30 PM

In re Hersh: as excited as I was by the inclusion of Stewart, I was puzzled by the ommission of Sy Hersh (among others.)

Re: List of bad reporters.

1.) Elisabeth Bumiller

Who else?

Posted by: Brad Reed at September 27, 2004 01:37 PM

Lawrence O'Donnell has said some really interesting things lately, esp. on McLaughlin Group. Keep your eye on him. I see leading edge 'liberalism' wedging in slowly. Not sure if it will be fast enough for the election, or if we'll have to wait for Lush's impeachment next year.

Judith Miller
Jodi Wilgoren
Adam Nagourney
Kit Seelie

Frank Rich?

Posted by: rd at September 27, 2004 02:31 PM

Strange list.

No Pincus, Priest, Michael Ware (of TIME, who has the world's largest pair), Hersh, Galloway, Jennie 8, George Packer, Nir Rosen, Stephen Kinzer, Andrew Revkin, Joshua Hammer, and so on.

Posted by: praktike at September 27, 2004 03:13 PM

What Jim Mahon and JDC said: there's at least three guys from Knight-Ridder who belong on this list.

Dick Polman...now there's a serious blast from the past. I remember reading his pieces in a Hartford-area alternative weekly back in the 1970s: the Free Valley Advocate, perhaps? When he moved up to writing for the dailies, it involved relocating, so he pretty much dropped out of sight, if you lived in CT.

I blinked at Mr. Rich, also.

What about Kurt Eichenwald? Is he a reporter?

Posted by: Josh Narins at September 27, 2004 06:56 PM

Knut Royce and Tim Phelps of Newsday deserve mention, for the Plame story.

Posted by: Thersites at September 27, 2004 07:58 PM

For the record, if Mr. Charlie Cook, a competent political handicapper, doesn't admit he's to the right of center, it is only because he won't admit he is to the right of center. That is, if I am to be believed about anything.

Posted by: Josh Narins at September 27, 2004 09:58 PM

This list is compiled by campaigndesk.org.
All the reporters on the list are campaign reporters only. Hence no Hersh, no Pincus, no Priest.

Posted by: ecoast at September 28, 2004 04:16 AM

the first two comments are on the mark for me. Frank Rich is not a reporter, and I thought they used a weighted average with extra points given for fame or reputation.

Posted by: phg at September 28, 2004 07:18 AM

i have major problem with todd purdum's inclusion on that list. even as honorable mention.

but, i'm gratified that at least ALL the rest of his political campaign colleagues at the times are omitted. hello, arthur sulzberger, are you paying attention? this is what bill keller and jill abramson have brought you to.

in repsonse to brad reed and ch2's suggestions for the worst reporters--i can only respond in re the two newspapers i read most devotedly: the times and the wall street journal.

so, here goes--in relative order of corruption:
kit seelye
jodi wilgoren
adam nagourney
jim rutenberg
elisabeth bumiller
todd purdum
eric halbfinger

(somebody please nudge daniel okrent awake. still too soon to weigh in, daniel? there still some shred of possibility your observations might actually be relevant?)

in their struggle and competition to become the next maureen dowd (i.e make the jump from campaign 'reporting' to op-ed), i suggest they re-focus their sights on venues more suitable: the weekly standard or townhall.com. then again, that's exactly where their sets appear set.
