It looks like George W. Bush can forget about Poland as a member of the Coalition of the Willing:
Posted by DeLong at October 4, 2004 09:57 AM | TrackBackHeadline news from Sky News - Witness the event: Polish troops will start to withdraw from Iraq in the New Year and all will be out by the end of 2005, the country's president has promised. Poland is the fourth-largest contributor of troops to the coalition in Iraq - with 2,500 - and there is strong opposition at home to the deployment. President Aleksander Kwasniewski said the Iraq situation would be different after January, when general elections would take place ahead of the creation of a national Government.
In the words of Snoop Dogg, when you dis Poland, you dis yourself.
And I willing to bet that Kwasnieski (Kvash-NYEV-ski on Bush's phonetic cheat sheet) will probably pull out regardless of whether there's elections.
Posted by: norbizness at October 4, 2004 10:12 AMAnd today on the BBC it was reported that if the Labor candidate wins the Australian election, Australia is going to take a walk, also.
Posted by: Bob H at October 4, 2004 10:35 AMYou forgot Poland?
Poland forgot you!
Ok. I give up. I will not forget about Poland!
Posted by: Willem at October 4, 2004 10:36 AMEritrea's still on board, right?
Posted by: JR at October 4, 2004 11:24 AMBut...what if Poland is on the same withdrawal plan that Bush might unveil for the US right after the election? Then they'd still be in the Coalition. Of the Cutting and Running.
Posted by: P O'Neill at October 4, 2004 11:30 AMIt must be Kerry's fault for being left off the list.
Posted by: bush at October 4, 2004 11:44 AMThat George Bush really has a magic touch, doesn't he?
Every thing he touches just comes up golden.

Posted by: sampo at October 4, 2004 01:11 PMSkyNews got it all wrong and you too, Brad. You are "cherry-picking" intellig... , I mean the article. Why did you ommit the last paragraph? :
"That is the reason why we decided to speak with the Iraqis and with our coalition partners, the United States, about a reduction of the Polish forces from January 1 and maybe to finish our mission at the end of 2005," he said.
What really happened is that the _defence minister_ was asked in an interview (http://serwisy.gazeta.pl/kraj/1,34308,2320636.html?as=3&ias=3):
"What is the deadline of a full pullout of the polish contingent from Iraq?"
- In my opinion such a deadline should be the expiring date of the UN Sec. Council resolution #1546. [end of 2005]
He got a rebuke by the prime minister for telling his "opinion" (PM Belka calls the defense minister on the carpet ;http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/1,53600,2321527.html), minister of foreign relations (http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/1,53621,2321538.html) and the president (Kwasniewski: no decision on a pullout from Iraq ; http://serwisy.gazeta.pl/kraj/1,34308,2321581.html).
To all you cut & runners, some translated quotes with a real meaning:
The same Minister of Defence: A decision of a immediate pullout of forces could cause a domino effect. Many more countries would pullout from Iraq, too. The consequences of such a decision would be very serious.
Polish President: We hope, that the January elections in Iraq will bring a significant impulse for stability. Our plans are well known: we wish to reduce the number of troops beginning January 2005 and are contemplating the end of the mission. Whether that will be the end of 2005 [...] or another date is difficult to say. It's part of the discussion. There is no decision. One thing is certain: we must act with responsibility.
The President of Poland takes a shot at Kerry's positions and at Kerry by name, and this gets spun as if *Bush* is losing an ally!
Ha, ha! The great Democratic spin, slime & lie propaganda machine in action. ;-)
The danger here, of course, is when you start believing your own propaganda -- down that road lies madness ... the Area 51 of the Mind where people actually believe young Dubya went around crashing jets (maybe into school buses?) before it was all covered up as a convenience for him because he might want to be president 30 years later. Where so many people around here reside already.
In addition to what MarcinGomulka noted, here's what the President of Poland said:
~~~
"It's sad that a Senator with twenty years of experience does not appreciate Polish sacrifice... I don't think it's a question of ignorance.
"One thing has to be said very clearly: this Coalition is not just the United States, Great Britain and Australia, but there's also contribution of Polish, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Spanish soldiers who died in Iraq. It's immoral to not see this involvement we undertook because we believe that we have to fight terrorism together, that we need to show international solidarity..."
http://chrenkoff.blogspot.com/2004/10/polish-president-disses-democrat.html
~~~
"It's immoral..." Geesh. That's sure how to win friends abroad, Senator!
For me it'd be almost worth it to have Kerry elected just to see him use his superior diplomatic tact putting together his promised grand international coalition of allies he's already denigrated as being "bribed", "coerced" or "puppets" when not dismissing them entirely.
"Brad. You are 'cherry-picking' intellig... , I mean the article. Why did you ommit the last paragraph?"
Because it goes so well with the pose of self-righteous truth-telling, especially when slurring others as being deceiving "liars", over and over.
When facts and the truth get in the way of self-righteous truth-telling it spoils the fun, so snip snip snip.
Posted by: Jim Glass at October 4, 2004 02:43 PMBy the end of 2005, the Iraqi Army, National Guard and Police will probably have over 100,000 well trained, well equiped and highly motivated men deployed. Today, according to Brookings' Michael O'Hanlon, there are just over 20,000 in this category. It is widely expected that US forces will be starting to withdraw before that point. Poland's defence minister is stating the obvious.

He's wrong. There are only about 8000 who completed the course and are well equipped.
Additionally, thousands of applicants (~30,000) will be fired (with pensions) because of the bad vetting process.

Dude, it's your country too, and your brothers and sisters dying out there. Why are you so happy?
Whenever Bush screws up (which is often), I get upset. When Kerry screwed up (I was in MA when he voted for this sick war), I was upset. But you. . . What kind of a sick maniac would enjoy the prospect of a politician fucking things up for our troops?
Posted by: Dragonchild at October 4, 2004 06:54 PMP.M.Blair is talking behind closed doors about transfering up to 5000 British troops out of Iraq to Afghanistan to defeat the real terrorists in 2005 to save his party.

Posted by: Elaine Supkis at October 4, 2004 11:30 PMI'm an Australian, and I'll let you into a secret.
Our armed forces are in the Solomons, and are recovering from East Timor.
What we have in Iraq is a consular guard.
We dont have any troops in the Sunni Triangle, or in the South, or in Kurdistan, or along the Syrian border.
We have some troops in the Presidential District, guarding our embassy, and we have some ships and aircraft based outside Iraq.
But we dont have combat troops in Iraq.
Australia is a practice-squad QB in the Coalition of the Willing - pulling a minimum wage salary, and never actually seeing time on the field.
Ian Whitchurch
Posted by: Ian Whitchurch at October 5, 2004 01:12 AMBush is not going to coddle European surrender monkeys. There is no way that this president will ever allow any foreigner to promote American interests. He will defend America himself, at least from now on.
Well, ok, he will not actually put his own interests or life on the line. The one time he had a chance to do that, he screwed off to Texas, Alabama and some as yet undisclosed locations.
But he will send young men and women from outside his family's social circles to die in Iraq on a false premise. And he will use their deaths as evidence of all the "hard work" HE is doing. And he sure will sound tough and stubborn, I mean resolute, when on the stump surrounded by his amen choir.
