President Bush doesn't understand that in 2001 he claimed to be part-owner of a timber-growing business, and so fell under his own definition of "small business owner." Perhaps he should follow Cheney's advice--or what Cheney's advice should have been--to check factcheck.org:
Posted by DeLong at October 8, 2004 07:27 PM | TrackBackPresident Bush himself would have qualified as a "small business owner" under the Republican definition, based on his 2001 federal income tax returns. He reported $84 of business income from his part ownership of a timber-growing enterprise. However, 99.99% of Bush's total income came from other sources that year. (Bush also qualified as a "small business owner" in 2000 based on $314 of "business income," but not in 2002 and 2003 when he reported his timber income as "royalties" on a different tax schedule.)
A small lie that can be easily understood and easily debunked (thanks to Cheney's endorsement of the site). That's why "Need some wood?" will be the tagline from this debate.
If I was a Saturday Night Live writer, I'd already be working up the "Bush's Trees Lumber Land" faux commercial. After all, the guy's gonna need a job after next January.
Posted by: Grumpy at October 8, 2004 08:29 PMGrumpy's right on it: it's the "easily understood/easily debunked" aspect that makes this such a potential winner.
Say it once, say it often: "Need some wood?"
Posted by: rjt at October 8, 2004 08:54 PMOk, so now I have the facts to prove Kerry was right and Bush wrong on that one...
- but -
this is another of those situations where Kerry could and should have killed him and did not. Bush actually got the laughers on his side when he mocked Kerry on that.
Why did Kerry not jump on him and demonstrate that he did not even understand his own personal finances, instead of what looked like dropping the matter after Bush's deriding comment?
Same thing on Eastern European countries as members of the "coalition" - there is a very juicy quote "we were taken for a ride" I believe by the President of Poland... Why not use it???
Posted by: ergos at October 8, 2004 10:06 PMI think Kerry is wise in not persuing some of Bush's remarks (read: lies). Bush doesn't need anyone to help him look like the arrogant ass that he is. A good many of us know he is lying. Kerry just sits back and says "get a load of this guy."
Bush tells so many little lies and convolutes so much of what he says that it's almost not worth it to call him on it. He really does think he's right!

Posted by: Audrey Butler at October 8, 2004 11:54 PMI must admit, taken out of context, this small business tax thing looks to me like a red herring.
In 2001 Bush was president of the United States. He had other things to do than worry about his tax return.
I *do* run a small business, and I can tell you the details of *my* personal tax return utterly escape me: running the business, paying VAT etc. are far more important to my daily life. My accountant actually handles the income tax aspect.
Posted by: John at October 9, 2004 12:43 AM"I must admit, taken out of context, this small business tax thing looks to me like a red herring."
That was Kerry's point exactly. You're a small businessman and this tax change doesn't affect whether you would hire more employees. Bush didn't even know that he qualified as a small businessman under this rule. It's a red herring all right - a Republican red herring.
I wish that this site supported HTML.
Posted by: No Preference at October 9, 2004 03:58 AMJohn -- better pay more attention to your accountant -- we do not have a VAT tax in the US.
Does your business operate in Europe?
Another Republican line that is starting to spread that should be countered is the new one that the stock market crashed under Clinton.
From the market peak until Bush took office the S&P 500 fell 7%. After Bush took office the S&P 500 fell another 42%. So over 80% of the stock market crash occurred after Bush took office. The S&P 500 rose 312% under Clinton and is down between 15% to 20% under Bush -- that is the trading range this year.
Hey Kerry, I've got your timber right here!
Posted by: Justin @ RSR at October 9, 2004 06:26 AMAlas, Factcheck.org is a great idea that has been implemented weakly. There appears to be a strong desire to "balance" criticism on both sides, and this has become strongly in evidence during the debates. They pick an equal number of points from both, regardless. Sometimes this requires skipping over errors from one side and exaggerating or manufacturing errors from the other. Exactly like the TV "fact check" features. Sigh.
For an example of fact-check.org ignoring lies from one side, consider the Cheney-Edwards debate. At one point they nailed Cheney for his "never met Edwards before" remark but don't go deep enough, and they don't address the equally wrong "Edwards home town newspaper has taken to calling him Senator Gone" remark. I guess they felt their report was already too hard on Cheney.
For examples of fact-check.org manufacturing "errors" for one side, review their report on last night's debate. One of the alleged errors they "caught" Kerry on was his assertion that Shinseki was forced to retire by Bush. They found one quote that Shinseki was planning to retire, and used that to counter Kerry's claim. But if they'd dug further they'd find all sorts of reports that his retirement was accelerated by Bush. (Josh Marshall mentions that point in passing today, as though it's an "everybody knows" kind of thing.) Another alleged error was when Kerry said the latest report showed the sanctions and inspections had worked in removing weapons from Iraq. Factcheck.org quoted from a NY Times article that gave the opinion that the report was inconclusive on that point (another article written carefully to try not to offend the right wing), but you don't have to dig hard to find many other articles that report that's what the report does say. And, in fact, there were no WMDs, so what else can one conclude?
Posted by: Observer at October 9, 2004 06:29 AMI don't think Bush's mistatement will have the same impacyt as Gore's mistatement about visiting the disaster area with the head of FEMA when actually he visited it alone.
I am not making a statement about Bush, Gore, or Kerry. I am making a statement about our media culture. Particularly the talking heads.
I ask you, name one journalist - one - who was fired for reporting that Gore said that he "invented the Internet."
Name one journalist - one - who was fired for overreporting Whitewater.
I can guarantee you that if Kerry is elected, there will be four more years of "scandals." See Swiftboats.
Fox News and Rush emerged becaused of a perceived "liberal bias" in the media. Where is the liberal news network that has emerged in response to the current Whitewater media.
(Note: I have heard that the British Guardian is thinking of creating an American edition. This should be actively encouraged. Also, Al Jazeera has been thinking of English language broadcasts. Why not?)

In the course of his duties in August 1977, a Dutch veterinary
surgeon was required to treat an ailing cow. To investigate its internal
gases he inserted a tube into that end of the animal not capable of facial
expression and struck a match. The jet of flame set fire first to some
bales of hay and then to the whole farm causing damage estimate at L45,000.
The vet was later fined L140 for starting a fire in a manner surprising to
the magistrates. The cow escaped with shock.

Posted by: Dan at November 12, 2004 01:06 AMA payday loans secured by a personal check - such as a payday loan - is very expensive credit. Let's say you write a personal check for $115 to borrow $100 in quick cash for up to 14 days. The check casher or payday lender agrees to hold the check until your next payday loan cash. At that time, depending on the particular plan, the lender deposits the check, you redeem the check by paying the $115 in cash, or you roll-over the check by paying a fee to extend the payday loans for another two weeks. In this example, the cost of the initial loan is a $15 finance charge and 391 percent APR. If you roll-over the loan three times, the finance charge would climb to $60 to borrow $100 payday loan cash advance.
