When shrillness comes, it comes not one by one but in battalions. Yesterday was the day of the economists: the Dismal Science became the Shrill Science. Today it is the foreign affairs and national security specialists who are shrill:
Posted by DeLong at October 12, 2004 02:40 PM | TrackBackShrillblog: Security Scholars for a Sensible Shrillness: The results of this policy have been overwhelmingly negative for U.S. interests. While the removal of Saddam Hussein’s regime was desirable, the benefit to the U.S. was small as prewar inspections had already proven the extreme weakness of his WMD programs, and therefore the small size of the threat he posed. On the negative side, the excessive U.S. focus on Iraq led to weak and inadequate responses to the greater challenges posed by North Korea’s and Iran’s nuclear programs, and diverted resources from the economic and diplomatic efforts needed to fight terrorism in its breeding grounds in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere in the Middle East. Worse, American actions in Iraq, including but not limited to the scandal of Abu Ghraib, have harmed the reputation of the U.S. in most parts of the Middle East and, according to polls, made Osama Bin Laden more popular in some countries than is President Bush. This increased popularity makes it easier for al-Qaida to raise money, attract recruits, and carry out its terrorist operations than would otherwise be the case...
These are just scholars. They live in the luxury of the ivory tower. They don't realize, as the practitioners in the Pentagon do, that killing brown people, I mean foreign policy, is hard work.
Posted by: Pudentilla at October 12, 2004 05:18 PM"Removing (foreign) regimes," whether it might be "desirable" from our perspective or not, is PROPERLY the business of the SUBJECTS of those "regimes". And that's JUST ONE reason why THIS citizen of THIS regime would like to know why "security scholars" EVERYWHERE aren't "shrill" about the nomination and ratification of Porter Goss to direct the CIA.
There MUST be a less slimy guy than HIM to do THAT job SOMEWHERE. And you'd like to think people who earn their keep bird-dogging the GWOT would want the rest of us to know something about him and his 'associates' too...

Posted by: jasper emmering at October 13, 2004 12:32 AMPerhaps a more important point not being addressed here is the disappearance of nuclear weapons making materials that were not and still are not being secured as a part of Bush's plan for Iraq. This means the WMD threat to the US has been verifiably increased by the incompetence of the Bush administration.
"It's equipment that is very specialized, very hard to come by, that's tightly controlled, so it could be very helpful for [those] seeking to build weapons," says Jon Wolfsthal, a proliferation expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington...It's very troubling that any of this stuff should be unprotected, let alone go missing," says Mr. Wolfsthal. "If one of these things went missing in the US, there would be a massive criminal investigation ... and people going to jail."
"There was a definite lack of regard [by the US] in guarding nuclear sites" after the war, says Michael Levi, a nuclear terrorism expert at King's College London. "There is no question that this should have been guarded."

A payday loans secured by a personal check - such as a payday loan - is very expensive credit. Let's say you write a personal check for $115 to borrow $100 in quick cash for up to 14 days. The check casher or payday lender agrees to hold the check until your next payday loan cash. At that time, depending on the particular plan, the lender deposits the check, you redeem the check by paying the $115 in cash, or you roll-over the check by paying a fee to extend the payday loans for another two weeks. In this example, the cost of the initial loan is a $15 finance charge and 391 percent APR. If you roll-over the loan three times, the finance charge would climb to $60 to borrow $100 payday loan cash advance.
