Sam Rosenfeld writes:
TAPPED: November 2004 Archives: CAN'T STOP THE LIES. It seems clear that the bulge on George W. Bush's back in the three debates came from a bulletproof vest. If Bush and his spokespeople don't want to admit that, fine. Did they really have to dump on the tailor, though -- and lie gratuitously?
Internet conspiracy theorists and some Democrats have insisted that the bulge was the outline of a radio receiver that got debate answers from an offstage adviser and transmitted them into a hidden presidential earpiece. But Andrew H. Card Jr., the White House chief of staff, dismissed the bulge as nothing more than "a poorly tailored suit."
Ken Mehlman, the Bush campaign manager, went even further and said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that "the gentleman responsible for the tailoring of that suit is no longer working for his administration."
In fact, Mr. de Paris is still making suits for Mr. Bush, and he was not at all happy to have four decades of work - he has been the tailor to every president since Lyndon B. Johnson - called into question.
"Well, I feel bad, but I cannot do anything," Mr. de Paris said in an interview on Friday in his shop on 14th and G Streets, just three blocks from the White House....
The answer is, "Yes." They did have to dump on the tailor. They did have to lie gratuitously. It's what they do. It's who they are.
What are we to tell our children?
"What we are to tell our children?" is a very good question. Here's what I'm telling mine: "Hige sceal þe heardra, heorte þe cenre, mod sceal þe mare þe ure maegen lytlað."

Posted by: Steve at November 8, 2004 01:31 PMGiven the track record of these people when caught lying (to wit, they have been known to keep on lying until the weight of evidence becomes overwhelming), I find myself doubtful of a bullet-proof vest.
But, assuming a vest, why hasn't the press
a - checked into what types of bullet-proof vests there are and why would there be a plate high in the back of one?
b - asked why is bullet-proof vest needed during the debates? (I find this to be the most insulting.)
c - asked since proper tailoring can hide the most unsightly bulges (including holstered weapons), why didn't they have the president's suits tailored around the vest?
OTOH, now we know why Bush has never visited Ford's Theatre.

Posted by: linnen at November 8, 2004 01:37 PMIt's surprising that Bush, who is never within 500 yards of anyone who hasn't made the "Bush pledge" of eternal fealty, needed a bullet-proof vest, but apparently Kerry did not.

People with a lot more time on their hands than me have searched hunderds of impact-vest catalogs. This is not exactly new or secret technology. No one has found anything like the bulge on Bush's back.

Posted by: Cranky Observer at November 8, 2004 01:54 PMInteresting article about this tailor recently in The New Yorker. He's all about quality and professionalism and takes a huge amount of pride in the work he's done for many presidents (Dem and Repub). I would think reputations are very important in his line of work; obviously Card didn't think of that before this slander. Perhaps they dumped on Mr. de Paris because he's from France.
Posted by: darryl at November 8, 2004 02:32 PMI still don't believe them. I think they just chose a story that ranked on the plausibility meter and went with it, since it was already there. It is clearly a wired device, or....an alien symbiote. Push the latter and see where the story goes next.
Posted by: bigfoot at November 8, 2004 02:48 PMSo, if they kept it quiet that the president (what about the senator?) wearing a bulletproof vest in what is essentially a well guarded TV studio as a security measure (to avoid confirming or denying an aspect of the president's security), why is it cool to talk about it now?
Is the president not planning to ever appear in front of people again in any kind of uncontrolled circumstance?
I agree. Push the symbiote angle and see what falls out.
Posted by: xian at November 8, 2004 03:33 PMThere's also this quote:
"For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace." Ephesians 6:12
"Not one step back." Russian troop orders, battle of Stalingrad.
Posted by: theorajones at November 8, 2004 03:36 PMUh, after all we've been through for the past almost-four years, haven't you people learned anything? They lie as a means of expressing their utter contempt for anyone who gets in their way (even a hapless tailor). Doing this is a tried-and-true method of demonstrating their power, and American voters are a hell of a lot more impressed with power than with truth.

What you need to do is get some of them Dan Rather document investigators looking into this. I'm sure they have all gotten on this just like a recently released convict jumping on his blowup balloon gal!
Or them swift boat investigators who seem to be without work. Now there's a group of guys who want to get to the bottom of unsavory behavior wherever it lies... I'm sure.
Posted by: ritchie at November 8, 2004 06:22 PMThe best and most plausible exposition I have seen so far on this topic is the following.

Posted by: ritchie at November 8, 2004 06:30 PMHaven't we already had the testimony of professional photo analysts on this issue? The object under Bush's jacket was box with 3 wires attached to it, two running upward toward his collar, one running downward, toward his belt. The point of Tapped feeling publicly sorry for the taylor is to make the "clear" conclusion that Bush was wearing armor go down better. In the Tapped take, the controversy "should" be about why the mighty feel the need to chew up and spit out their servants, not about whether Bush was getting cues help from off stage, why Bush couldn't get through a debate without an intellectual crutch. So perhaps the question here is "Why are we blogged by these lair?"
By the way, tell me again why he and Cheney had to testify together (off the record) before the 9/11 commission?
Posted by: kharris at November 9, 2004 04:34 AMYou know, I've been looking through the post-election posts here to see any evidence that the Democrats et al. have in any way internalized the fact that they just lost the election.
Apparently not. Instead I'm seeing Bush flamed because the Secret Service didn't want him telling the world about his line of defense against getting shot.
You people are not going to win elections as long as politics remains, for you, a way of displacing your own internal negativity on Bush-as-scapegoat. The man is flawed, but he sure as Hell doesn't deserve the sort of hatred you're dumping on him. And I think a majority of Americans who aren't emotionally unwell can see that.
The United States needs two adult political parties. Right now, it's got about 0.75 such parties, with two-thirds of the adulthood being in "Jesusland". Please, guys, at least work your way from 0.25-adulthood to 0.5-adulthood. Your countrymen will thank you. The remains of Jefferson spinning wildly in his grave will also thank you.
Sheesh.
