The Javelin Catcher

From Samuel Kernell and Samuel L. Popkin, ed., (1988) Chief of Staff: Twenty-Five Years of Managing the Presidency (La Jolla: University of San Diego Press: 0520063384). p. 182:

Jack Watson (Carter): Let me add just one quick one. People have different images. We have got the Rumsfeld image of the chief of staff as the grease, or the sand, on occasion. A friend of mine asked me if the White House chief of staff was more like, in sports terms, a quarterback, which is sort of the glorified image, or a goalie or a utility infielder... or a cheerleader. I said the image that comes to my mind, borne out by some of the stories being told this morning, is that of a javelin catcher. (Laughter)

H.R. Haldeman (Nixon): Excellent!
