As a rule, I don't spend much time donning the mask and costume of Beta Software-Using Man. It rarely works. But I have been playing with the nice and well-thought-out Ecto, and have been largely happy in spite of Ecto's beta status (with the exception of one misadventure involving the Rainbow-Colored Spinning Beachball of Death (or at least of Limb-Loss). One of the things I detested most about the 2000 Republican primary season was the politics of pandering to racist sentiments. For my two cents, the people of South Carolina and other post-bellum states should be able to fly the Confederate flag (discretely) if they want to honor their heritage and the (nice) parts of the old South. Yes, it's ignoring the question of slavery but most people build their lives on ignoring the inconvenient.
The problem is that it's become a lightning rod for a prejudicial racial subtext on both sides of the issue. For that matter, no national candidate should need to talk at Bob Jones university except that they want to covertly signal they are "for" racism. Now I've known many a (northern) racially enlightened Republican in my time. McCain did take Michigan after all. While McCain may have eventually lost because Bush's political machine had more insider support and money, it was ugly seeing him lose and the Republican national candidate lofted to the heights by not all that subtle appeals to ugly racial sentiment. It was one of the factors that led me to not vote Republican for the first time in my life.

Thanks for telling us about the new blog software. I'm personally digging it, it's about time someone came up with a program like this for the Mac.
