This little note below about the mood at the World Economic Forum confirms what I've been hearing through a bunch of other channels as well. Alan Cowell of the New York Times is not telling it straight. Anti-Bushism is significantly stronger than it was last year, when there were a number of people outside the United States willing to entertain the possibility that the U.S. had accurate intelligence of close links between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein and of Saddam's possession of large amounts of terror weapons and of various delivery capabilities. Now nobody takes anything the Bush administration says about anything at all as anything other than a probable manipulative lie.

I wasn't in the hall, so I couldn't see everything, but when the camera panned the audience at the end of his little apologia, I could that many were literally sitting on their hands -- or at least, keeping them firmly in their laps....
[W]hat's blossomed here over the past two years isn't anti-Americanism, but anti-Bushism, which is why Joe Biden was able to get a big round of applause at a session this afternoon simply by observing that Bush, Cheney and the neocons do not represent the views of the vast majority of the American people...
The story of the neutering of the New York Times will be an interesting account when it's finally written....

I stopped in Asheville, NC of all places last spring break to get something to eat and arrived in time to see the police arrest several dozen protesters. What was even crazier was the protesters on bicycles that were followed everywhere by the bicycle police just waiting for a traffic violation. There was almost nothing about this or thousands of other protests right here in the USA on American news or print. The Europeans know that a lot of Americans feel the same way they do about Mr. Bush. I think it is definately incorrect to talk about anti-Americanism. Clinton is still popular in Britain and Europe.

Now I cannot plead for all Belgians, and even less all Europeans. I also heard a chilling story from a Belgian-Marrocan geneticist who is systematically interogated at the border and sees all his mail opened (so, did I for a while BTW*). For the record, he is an atheist, an admirer of America, and a harsh critic of Arab regimes. This sweet fellow apparently had to spend his winter vacations in Belgium arguing against anti-American feelings among his Arab friends in Belgium. And, surely enough, this good-will Ambassador of America did get harrassed once again on his way back... home.
Notice the irony: all this talk about European anti-Americanism blah blah blah. Have you heard any pondit meditating upon American anti-Europeanism (Engl. Europhobia)? Did you hear any story about any French official or citizen refering to a Bueergeere de la Liberte? Last time I spent a diner with some Repulican friends, I apparently commited a social mistake when, after hearing that the (Californian) Gewurztraminer I had brought was my guest's favorite wine, I began to mention that my wife and I took our first romantic trip in Alsace. I never had a chance to tell that story. Our hosts were actually UPSET that I would mention something about France... How rude of me!

Well, that may be more an indication of gullibility than anything else. (Sorry for the ad hominem, but it's necessary...)
My sense is that there's a lot less *passion* in the anti-Americanism, which could be mistaken for less anti-Americanism.
The war is over, the U.S. says it will leave by June 30, and the anti-Americans, based on their stated position (invasion of Iraq proves America is an imperial power!), have to think that's a good thing.

There has been a willingness to believe that Bush fooled the US electorate in 2000 and that the majority of Americans don't support his policies... but this may evaporate if he is reelected. We took Italian lessons with a number of women, mostly in their 20's and 30's, who held middle management positions and thought that a good way to spend their vacation was learning a fourth or fifth language. They were anti-Bush for sure. I did not pick up on any anti-americanism anywhere. Most of the concern was whether Bush was mentally up to the job. As one Irishman put it, every now and then, you Americans elect a really stupid person.
