Writing in Slate, Eric Umansky writes that the news pages* of the Wall Street Journal are our better press corps--the only ones with the wit and the cojones to say "straight out and right up high" that the Bush administration's budget is a clown show, an exercise in fiscal fantasy. He's right. All in all, the Journal does a very good job.
The other papers? On the budget story, they seem to pump out Bush administration propaganda on page 1 and, in Umansky's words, largely reserve their "fact-checking... for the retired, the underemployed, and anyone who reads inside the A-sections."

(The other papers' fact-checking is largely saved for the retired, the underemployed, and anybody who reads inside the A-sections.)
*Unfortunately, the Wall Street Journal news pages come bundled with the editorial pages.

He also suggested that the weak economy explained half of the deficit. He also suggested that much of the deficit was due to increased defense spending but defense spending was not that high. Oh he weaved in so many contradictions into one commentary is something one would have to read (or listen) for oneself.

What is interesting about WSJ op-ed pieces is that they make perfect sense if you didn't read any other sources of news or if you didn't have enough of a knowledge base to say "Hey, wait, what about the stupid, huge budget deficit?" or "Hey, wait, what about the stupid, expensive, needless war?" They are in their own little (albeit nicely furnished)world.

He made the observation long ago that you can get more straight dope from business newspapers, basically because of their conservative readership: the WSJ, e.g., doesn't feel any need to distort and sugarcoat a conservative policy to make it sound acceptable to the public.
Wait a minute!!! Chomsky and I had the same thought? I sort of assumed that, whoever is making decisions about the line-up of editorial page and news guys, that (those) person(s) must be fully aware of the different worlds in which those two sets of employees live. The first explanation I came up with was that the editorial page is popular with one group, the news with another, and nobody wanted to lose either readership. That seems a pretty fragile argument, given that each group was likely to notice what was written for the other. The innoculation against pressure from the White House, Congress and advertisers, on the other hand, offers real opportunities to publish honestly. Today's Capitol Journal, by John Harwood, for instance, suggests that the biggest problem Bush faces in his reelection effort is his failing credebility.
Alan Murray may be risking the whole game. The public face of the Journal once was from the editorial page, but he is now all over the place.

The sad thing is that the editorial page routinely distorts facts -- I used to play a game of reading the letters column just for the factual corrections being sent in by, for instance, the Census Bureau, to counter the lies in the editorials.
My pet explanation is that the editorial page provides cover for the news pages. The right-wing owners read the editorial pages and go "Ah, yes, this is our kind of paper", and don't bother to look at what the news pages are saying. And if they didd try to claim that the WSJ was "liberal", the news page editors would just point at the editorial page.
