Off-topic I know, but talking of Google, some program/virus has changed my homepage to Google, and changes it back no matter how many times I change it. Anybody know of any fixes? It may be the registry I need to change.

That Google problem sounds like it might be a particularly insidious trojan/spyware known as CWS (CoolWebSearch).

Spybot Search & Destroy is a free tool for detecting and removing spyware, available here:

Spyware Blaster is a free program that prevents known spyware from being downloaded/installed on your PC. For information and to download:

Everyone should have these (or comparable) programs on their computers.

If it is CoolWebSearch, the PC Magazine article said that none of the spyware solutions could remove it (although, presumably, that information is a month or two out-of-date by now). See

for instructions on getting rid of it.

In any case, I don't think CoolWebSearch points to Google by default, so I kind of doubt it's that. Best bet is to get Ad-Aware or Spybot and just have them look at your system and see what they say.

Thanks for the advice. I think it was CoolWebSearch. I had got rid of it last month, but the Google thing I couldn't fix. PaulB's instructions seem to have worked perfectly.

A word of caution when using Spyware removal products. Spyware can sometimes hijack legitimate system files which if found by a spyware removal product and removed by you can render your computer inoperable. Be sure you completely understand what files you are going to remove before you remove them. Do the research or talk to a professional! (As Spybot says: "Use at Your Own Risk.)
