The science fiction writer A.E. Van Vogt wrote a series of execrable novels set on an earth that was "the world of null-A.:" "A" stood for "Aristotelian logic," according to which yes/no questions had yes/no answers. Is a flounder a fish? Yes. Is a bicycle a fish? No. But on the world of null-A, by some process that I never and that I believe Van Vogt never understood, logic was "non-Aristotelian."
I now learn that National Review writer Donald Luskin comes not from the Theta Quadrant but from the World of Null-A. I asked the question, "Is Donald Luskin an enthusiastic endorser of the budget proposals that George W. Bush released a week and a half ago?" He wrote something that I interpreted as a "no" answer. I said so. He then went ballistic, and said I was lying. So I changed what I had written and said that Luskin gave a "yes" answer--and he went ballistic again, saying that I had compounded my lie.
Now there are yes/no questions that don't have yes/no answers that are true: "Is 'no' the answer to this question?" is the simplest one. But I did not think "Is Donald Luskin an enthusiastic endorser of the budget proposals that George W. Bush released a week and a half ago?" was one of them.
UPDATE: This is highly, highly amusing: I now have six emails from Luskin dittoheads denouncing me for lying and falsely claiming that Luskin is not an enthusiastic supporter of Bush economic and budget policies, and eight emails from Luskin dittoheads denouncing me for lying and claiming that Luskin is an enthusiastic supporter of Bush economic and budget policies. I'm tempted to introduce them to each other.
I suppose I should put the quotes here:
When I wrote: "Not even Donald Luskin will sign on to the Bush budget plan proposed last week: '...let's be clear.... I'm not signing up for steel tariffs or a farm bill or Medicare prescription benefits or abstinence counseling in Baghdad.' But it is the same administration with the same policies that it had last year (better policies, in some respects: the free-trade forces within the administration are stronger than they were), when he signed on gladly. But I'm glad to have him aboard."
Luskin went ballistic:
ABJECT FRAUD BY DELONG Brad DeLong has fraudulently misrepresented my views in an update to a posting on his website. He had asked those who sign a letter last year endorsing Bush's "economic plan" -- i.e., the tax cuts -- whether they would sign again today. I said "yes" in a posting earlier today, but sought to avoid being seen as endorsing every single thing the administration has done since then (which I do not), by being clear that I don't see most things as part of an "economic plan", and indeed the scope of the letter was very narrow. Now DeLong has fraudulently extracted only those parts of my posting that criticize the Bush administration, and completely omits the parts -- the main parts, the thrust of my posting -- where I say I would sign the letter again gladly. He provided no link to my original posting, so his readers have no opportunity to discover his lie. This has nothing to do with partisan beliefs -- this is just plain old out-and-out lying cheating fraud. Even virulently anti-Bush partisans should condemn DeLong for this lie. I demand a correction on DeLong's site, and urge anyone interested in the truth to email DeLong making a similar demand.
So I issued a correction: "Donald Luskin protests that I have misinterpreted him: that he is in fact an enthusiastic endorser of the proposed Bush 2005-2009 budgets."
And he went ballistic again:

What gain does DeLong hope to achieve by lying about my position? He is certainly free to disagree with it. But why lie about it? Why pretend there's no difference between an "economic plan" and a "budget"? Why switch fraudulently between the two, depending on how he wishes to misrepresent me at the moment?
He might have a little more credibility if the paragraph of mine to which he originally objected had not begun: "Not even Donald Luskin will sign on to the Bush budget plan proposed last week..." It's budget plan all the way down.
And, no, I'm not going to link to and thus spread my whuffie to somebody who belongs as a villain in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. What a maroon.

Luskin thinks that there is a difference between signing on to the (1) President's "economic growth and jobs proposal," and signing on to the (2) President's "budget."
Luskin thinks (1) is basically supply side tax cuts, and (2) is basically all spending, although he probably makes an exception for worker retraining and whatever it costs to run Treasury.
In Luskin's opinion, his signature last year indicated an endorsement of (1) but not (2), and he would be willing to make a similar endorsement this year. To Luskin, a medicare drug plan or steel tariffs do not constitute an "economic growth and jobs plan."
I think you're right on this (how could steel tariffs not be part of the "economic plan?"), but it's easy enough to parse what Luskin is saying, IMHO.
Except what he complained about was that I said he wasn't an enthusiastic supporter of the budget... as you'll see if you look at the striked-out portion of the post below.

He was one of the 250 "economists" to sign on to Bush's plan, but that was quite clearly an oversight of the treasury dept, since Luskin, as I commented in an earlier post, is not an economist. He is by definition off the ship.

An economist is anyone who thinks economically; we usually take this to mean someone who does this as a profession.
So Luskin isn't an economist; he's just a journalist. He doesn't view the world in this way. George Soros isn't an economist; he's a financier. Same issue. Alan Greenspan is an economist, though his primary job these days is as a central banker. But he thinks in terms of incentives and constraints. Bob Rubin has been known to think economically but he's a banker by trade.
The chattering heads on financial TV or in the popular press are definitely not economists. The stereotypical real economist is a bit rough around the edges and likely to offend people, definitely a bad TV character. I hope that clears things up a little. Brad, do you have any comments on this? You've been at this a whole lot longer than I have.

Given his support of only part of the overall plan, I suspect "no" was the correct way to go. If you support only part of a plan and hate the rest, then you don't support the plan.

The question is asking for people who would sign an equivalent commendation to that issued last year (presumably without appending a diatribe to their signature).
I'm not sure whether Luskin is saying that he would or would not sign. I suspect that he's saying he would sign. No doubt he'll correct me if I'm wrong. Of course, he may also correct me if I'm right (assuming that I understand the wonders of null-A logic).

Van Vogt's stories were far loonier than I'd remembered. We know from quantum mechanics that any electron is identical to any other electron (ditto any proton to any other proton, etc.). So Van Vogt should conclude from his "scientific law" that you never need an extension cord at all.
Van Vogt of course got his nonsense from Korzybski's "General Semantics" which also hooked S. I. Hayakawa long before he became Senator from California. Most right-wing loons, though, got hooked on Ayn Rand.

But on a side topic, I think Van Vogt is a better writer than you credit. His stories are original, jam packed with ideas and mixed science fiction devices (all in one tale: androids, time travel, aliens, AI...) in a way that was daring at the time for the genre. Many readers think he's a lot of fun, although perhaps most of them are in their 60s now, with crumbling old copies held together with rubber bands. Some of VVs stories were inspired by dreams, others by high fallutin' ideas like General Semantics--but there is something substantial going on there in that pulp context. I don't want to exaggerate his good points; I myself don't care for some of his works, but he is worthy of respect as a writer. If one can argue evolution in literature, Von Vogt made possible Philip K. Dick.

This had a very noticeable effect on the quality of his writing (many of his titles were simply rewrites or re editings of previous work). I think Robert Heinlein also suffered from similar problems around his cerebral hemmorage.
It is quite likely that this impacted the quality of many of Van Vogt's books.
That said, books like 'Slan' and 'The War against the Rull' or 'The Wizard of Linn' or 'The Weapon Shops of Isher' still remain incredibly gripping science fiction.
I never managed to finish NullA either.
