Offer an Honors Thesis Seminar in the Summer?

PEIS STAFFING MEMORANDUM

To: PEIS Majors Thinking of Graduating in the Summer or Fall
From: Brad DeLong, Chair, PEIS
Subject: Writing Your Honors Thesis Over the Summer
Date: March 1, 2004

Do any PEIS majors out there feel like writing their honors thesis over the summer? We're thinking of offering a summer honors thesis seminar--if there is sufficient demand for it. This is a preliminary "ping" to see if anyone (and how many anyones) are interested.

Drop me and Ms. Katie Dustin notes at delong@econ.berkeley.edu and kdustin@uclink.berkeley.edu if you are...

Heh. I don't go to Berkeley, but I tried writing my thesis last summer. Wanna know how it went? I think I touched one book. It's now March, and I've got my rough draft due in three days.

Three days. Forty pages. Feminists, pornography, and the First Amendment.

I want to die.

I'd be willing to do an honors thesis seminar on PIES this summer, but not PEIS.

A conversation in 1979 (?) in Stephens Hall.

Peer advisor: Why do you want to major in PEIS?

Almost Junior: I have done a lot of research on undergraduate majors at Berkeley, and I have determined that....

PEIS is the only major on campus that rhymes backwards and forwards.

Peer advisor: ???

Political Economy
Industrial Society [sic]

Societies Industrial
Economy Political

If that applied to me that would be great, I was always more productive during my summer sessions.

I'd love to, but somehow I doubt my background in machine learning, crypto, and linear algebra qualify me. *sigh* That's what I get for taking a computer science degree.

I like that Berkeley still *has* a degree with something so quaint as *Industrial* in the title- since we have almost no industry left in this country. Too bad I have the job, children, and wife that would object to a nice six week sabbatical at Berkeley over the summer- something about maintaining my overleveraged household that is "artfully and successfully managed" according to dear leader Greenspan...
