Still more sadly Seutonius informs me that it was the emperor Gaius (as Brad claimed when advising N Gregory Mankiw to emulate him) not his uncle Tiberius (as I claimed in a comment) who said

Much more sadly Seutonius also writes that some claim that Gaius intended to make his horse consul. That is, he didn't actually do it.
I had been confident that our current head of state was not the dumbest in history.
By the way, can you think of anyone less like Caligula than Gred Mankiw ?

I dont know the context of the above quote, but
it's not like Octavius was a great guy or anything.
His rise to power was no less ruthless or bloody,
morso in fact.
I e-mailed Lowry about this, and this was his response:

not mean Julius Caesar, although maybe he wld have been better choice..."

Why bother with the PG-13* fictionalized adaptations? Read Tacitus & Suetonius and get the full blood, guts and debauched versions.
