Rich Lowry Drives the Agonist Insane

Rich Lowry drives the Agonist insane by confusing Gaius Julius Caesar with his adopted son and heir Gaius Octavius--later called Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, later called Imperator Caesar Augustus Divi Filius:

The Agonist: Why Rich Lowry Is An Idiot: Rich Lowry is an idiot.... Excuse me, but it was Julius who was the warmonger. It was Julius who cut off the hand of every resisting Gaul in the city of Uxellodunum. It was Julius that crossed the Rubicon River in 49 BC. It was Julius who smashed Pompey's army at Pharsalus. It was Julius who bedded Cleopatra. It was Julius who said, "Veni, Vidi, Vici--I came, I saw, I conquered." Augustus, or Octavian... was Julius' adopted son. He was the first emperor of Rome. Rome was at peace for more than 70% of his reign. Oh, what's the use. How can you trust these people to get the present right when they can't get something as simple as this?

A Gaius you mean the emperor Gaius ?
Sadly no.

Still more sadly Seutonius informs me that it was the emperor Gaius (as Brad claimed when advising N Gregory Mankiw to emulate him) not his uncle Tiberius (as I claimed in a comment) who said
"I don't care if they hate me so long as they fear me"

Much more sadly Seutonius also writes that some claim that Gaius intended to make his horse consul. That is, he didn't actually do it.

I had been confident that our current head of state was not the dumbest in history.

By the way, can you think of anyone less like Caligula than Gred Mankiw ?

I always figured that Julius was wanting to make Cleopatra a roman citizen, so that Caesarion, would be his heir and carry on the name. And the conservatives were apalled.

"Oderint dum metuant" ... I had never thought about Caligula's connections to the Bush administration before. Certainly naming Ashcroft as Attorney General isn't too different from putting a horse in the Senate. Other similarities are dancing in my head.... All the sudden, I want to recommend reading "I, Claudius" to Kerry as opposition research.

Excellent synopsis of this period of Roman history:

http://www.fsmitha.com/h1/chapter18.html

I dont know the context of the above quote, but
it's not like Octavius was a great guy or anything.
His rise to power was no less ruthless or bloody,
morso in fact.

I e-mailed Lowry about this, and this was his response:

"purpously picked augustus as consolidator of roman empire. definitely did
not mean Julius Caesar, although maybe he wld have been better choice..."

" All the sudden, I want to recommend reading "I, Claudius" to Kerry as opposition research."

Why bother with the PG-13* fictionalized adaptations? Read Tacitus & Suetonius and get the full blood, guts and debauched versions.

*Yup, hard as it is to be believed, Graves pulled his punches compared to his sources, especially on Tiberius.

Augustus did add more territory to the empire than any one else and a case can be made that he was thinking of world conquest (imperium sine fine dedi).
