Readprint.com is a very low traffic site (until now maybe) - but I'm guessing we'd see (google?) ads there before too long.
Both sites are providing royalty free text, and are (hopefully) sending it in compressed form to your browser, which means very low monthly operating costs.
Neither site is going to make lots of money, but like SDJ isn't it great that they exist?

Taxpayer funding sets up a basic service, maybe with additional revenues from private partnerships that bring in new and unusual ideas. Given the low cost of startups, even small localities may soon take pride in being world leaders.
Posted by: Lee A. on April 24, 2004 06:32 PMBandwidth and storage space are cheap. The biggest expense is creating e-books. Currently that's mostly done by volunteers. This month, for instance, I've put seven books into Project Gutenberg, and I expect I'll finish two or three more by the end of the week. Distributed Proofreaders currently scans, proofreads, and formats about 300 books a month. In the time it's taken to write this comment, I've scanned about a dozen pages of an old pulp paperback.
Pretty soon Google will start its own project to put public domain books online. They already have plans to scan every public domain book in Stanford's libraries, and they're looking for other sources of materials. These won't have the same level of proofreading as Project Gutenberg material, of course, but it'll still be pretty darned useful.
Posted by: Steven desJardins on April 24, 2004 09:13 PMBaen Books, www.baen.com, has been experimenting with putting its backlist on the web for free download - they already have the electronic publishing files so their marginal cost is just about limited to bandwidth and storage space.
What they have found is that listing a back title on line increases sales of that book in paper - people seem to browse the online but go buy the book to finish reading it.
They also increase sales for other books by the same author.
I am not sure how much of this notion of free web books as a loss leader and traffic draw translates to the sites you mentioned, but the available evidence does suggest that books on line lead to more people reading more books on paper - so those Amazon ads are probably pretty productive.

Plus I highly doubt Read Print will become commercial like Bartleby.

"Read Print is basically a collective effort by Hunter College students in New York. We're doing this primarily since we realize that a vast majority of college students are strapped for cash (like some of us are). The computer science majors involved with Read Print pretty much did all the back end programming. The rest of us add in the actual content. The web architecture itself is located on servers donated by http://www.undertag.com
What's in store for Read Print users in the near future?....
1. Our goal is to have a data repository larger than that of Bartleby by the end of 2004 (possibly even earlier). The programming students involved are already building a huge database architecture that will support thousands of more books, quotations, and other literary information.
2. Interaction system for users -- we are also building a communication system using which visitors to Read Print will be able to discuss literary works with each other. It's more fun to be able to discuss your interpretations of works with other readers!"
