A Planned Four-Day Email and Central Webservice Outage at Berkeley

Wow. Ninety-one full hours? A planned outage for ninety-one full hours? That's absolutely remarkable!

Subject: Campus computer downtime in June

Hello everybody,

Just in case you haven't already seen the announcements:

The campus computing group - IS&T will be moving all the major campus servers and systems to their new, greatly improved facility at the corner of Hearst and Oxford Streets in June.

There will be downtime for all servers including Socrates and Calmail.

They have already begun moving equipment and systems, but the major down time will be near the end of the month.

The basic schedule is as follows:

Calmail may be moved as early as June 18 - specific downtime to be announced.

Friday June 25 noon to Tuesday June 29th - 7am EXPECT ALL SYSTEMS TO BE DOWN

Information on the move (including a gallery of construction photos) has been broadcast on ITnews (online version of the Berkeley Computing and Communications newsletter) at: http://inews.berkeley.edu:7077/channels/iNews/dcmove/

A timeline for the move schedule is at: http://dcmove.berkeley.edu/schedule.html

My office recently moved to a new location. Computer systems, including email, were moved over a period of a few weeks, there were hardly any outages and those outages lasted for well under an hour.

Having run migration projects like this, the choice (as it always seems to be) is between time (availability) and cost. Even still, four (4!) days seems high. It looks like they've included a nasty mainframe swap in there, but the details are not real clear.

Still, think of all that undelivered spam! Will humanity ever recover?
