A Problem with the Third Harry Potter Movie

It suffers from an insufficiency of Severus Snape.

That is all.

I know a fair number of female Alan Rickman fans who will probably agree with you.

How are the Black and Lupin characters?

if that's really all (and i tend to trust Prof Delong on his movie tastes),
it's a damn sight better than the first and way, way, way better than the
second

Wow. Something on which we totally agree!

I've been a big fan of Alan Rickman's work ever since seeing him in "Closet Land" - and he's the one thing that made "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" bearable.

I dig Alan Rickman the most, but dammit, Gary Oldman! Gary Oldman! Gary Oldman!

Granted, I am partial.

I too am compelled to acknowledge that Dr. DeLong and I totally agree here.

What there was of Snape was chilling. Lupin was wonderful, Black pretty good.

Great stuff. I'd like to know how people who haven't read the books (either of them would be fine) liked/understood the movie, though.

Every time I see Rickman I immediately think of Dr. Lazarus in Galaxy Quest. Sort of ruins the effect...

And I loved him in "Sense and Sensibility" - Marianne actually lucked out in the end, he was so much more attractive than that cad Willoughby.

ALL movies suffer from an insufficiency of Alan Rickman!

Yes, but it had about 20 seconds of Alan Rickman cross-dressing, which is worth about 5 minutes of standard Alan Rickman.

I would cheerfully pay $11.50 to watch Alan Rickman read from the phone book.

Rickman is great, but there is a limitation to his snape, which is that his animosity is not personal enough. In the book he is not just an ominous distant figure sneering, but a constant presence and nemesis. Remember, they're afraid in books 1 & 2 that he's working for he-who-must... Rickman's Snape is great, but it lacks the personal vendetta that Snape has in the book.

And IMHO, this is orders of magnitude better than either of the earlier movies. The cinematography and the acting both summon up a far more real HP world. It's less literal, but has a higher degree of fidelity.

I also like Severus Snape as the actor more than as the character. He reminds me of my quite interesting eighth grade social studies teacher.
On the other hand, my eighth grade social studies teacher did kill and eat a student. He did have some provocation since the kid kept vandalising his house.

The P of A is unique among the Potter books in not having any Voldamort appearance. In it, Harry is most despairing over the loss of his parents but is offered his best opportunity to date to learn about them with the appearamnce Of Lupin and Black. What he learns is not all good and Harry is forced to reassess his notions of his father and Snape, as well. Snape is a big part of the book but occurs in the movie only as a foil. Movies always compromise the books they're based on lest they go on for ever. This one captured spectacularly the great back-in-time sequence near the end of the book but touched Harry's psycological struggles only incidently.

I certainly agree that most movies suffer from an Alan Rickman insufficiency. Two gems -- Rasputin, with Rickman as the title character -- he thus gets a marvelously drawnout death scene -- and "Truly, Madly, Deeply" with Juliet Stevenson.

It was great fun to see Rickman, Oldman, Thewlis and Spalls in the same room at the same time, and to see Julie Christie. On top of it all, I enjoyed the movie, though as is often the case with teenagers, Emma Watson comes across as much more interesting and interested than Radcliffe and Glint

The best of the three, by far. But the HP fans who are kids are mostly trashing it because it left so much of the book out.

I thought the director did what the publisher should have done, especially to books 4 and 5: gave it a good edit. Sideplots were virtually eliminated. Yeah, a lot of good story background was missing, but you can still get that from the book.

Interestingly, additional details were added to the time-turner sequence that resolved some open questions about JKR's time travel theory. This is good ... as one of the weak points of the books was the introduction of time travel (as in: if time travel is possible, why didn't Dumbledore go back and prevent Voldemort from killing Harry's parents?).

HI...I like reading Harry Potter...and seeing
it in the movie screen..the book was awesome
and does get better and better...But the movie
sequels...especially the third one...just gets
worser..I mean the first 2 of Harry Potter was
great...but this third one is a big flop...it is
getting shorting each time..huh..while the book
is getting longer...If the\book is getting
longer..should the movie be getting longer
instead of oppossite...sorry..but whoever is
responsible on making the third Harry Potter
like this...is not doing very well...when I saw
the movie..it seems like the magic had been
taken away..like when the dementors takes all
the good inside a person...leaving the memories
inside you..I am very disappionted that whoever
made this film was in hurry and as if it did not
care...about making this movie...the kids was
suppose to wear their robes when they were at
Hogwarts...unless they are in the muggle world.
It skip the Quiditch championship and the part
were Harry was to be told about moony, wormtail,
padfoot,and prongs...who were actually Lupin,
Pettergrew, snd Black....the actors did not act
as much..because they did not have that much
lines to act upon...it was not as intense, scary,
or exciting...since there was no twist to this
movie...unlike the book....the book was more
exciting...Why the movie people try to take the
magic out of a fantansy.....they are starting
make the great books..like Ella Enchanted&Harry
Potter....look fake...which is terrible...they
don't give the special effort to making it more
real...more magical..and enchanting...something
that make you believe...that there is still hope
and love...just like in fairy tales...and
fantasy books....I like the Actors and the
scenery...in Ella Enchanted and Harry Potter...
but the movie is written and made terribly...as
if they don't care about the fans who like too
see there book come alive in the movie..I hope
that if they try to make a movie out of great
book...they should try not to skip alot of
important details..and hope do better for
the next Harry Potter....
