Why Oh Why Are We Ruled by These Liars? (Ogged-Is-Shrill Edition)

Ogged begs for someone to call Dick Cheney a liar. I am happy to oblige: Dick Cheney is a liar.

Unfogged: Will someone please finally call Dick Cheney a liar? Please?

Bluntly contradicting the Bush administration, the commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks reported Wednesday there was ``no credible evidence'' that Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaida target the United States.

Days ago.

``He was a patron of terrorism,'' Cheney said of Saddam during a speech before the James Madison Institute, a conservative think tank based in Florida. ``He had long-established ties with al-Qaeda.''

And Bush.

President Bush yesterday defended Vice President Dick Cheney's assertion this week that Saddam Hussein had longstanding ties with Al Qaeda, even as critics charged that the White House had no new proof of a connection.

At a news conference with Afghan president Hamid Karzai, Bush stood by his vice president, saying Hussein ''had ties to terrorist organizations," though he did not specifically mention Al Qaeda.

That's a weasel. He didn't mention Al Qaeda because he knows there's no connection (he's relying on Saddam's funding for Palestinians to make his statement true) but Bush nevertheless leaves the impression that he's backing Cheney (the reporter fell for it, at least).

And, while we're at it, why can't we have a press corps that doesn't fall for things like this?

Speaking of shrill (or should I say shill?), David Brooks wants to know why we are so polarized as a nation:

Much of the reason we are so polarized as a nation is the *combination* of an extreme right-wing hack media sector, combined with a highly partisan Republican/think-tank sector. If either one of these sectors was more responsible, it would have a moderating effect, but instead they play off each other. It's disgusting.

Are you back to asking "reporters" to do "work"?

Thought we'd settled that. Disinclination, inability, and apathy kind of limit that kind of thing for them.

Why aren't people talking to Bush and Co. right now, in this context, about letting Zarquawi (sp.) go before the invasion? Why isn't this a big, big scandal?

Did any of you know that when the so-called new Iraqi democracy unfolds...that pre-written in its constitution is a fact that Iraq is not allowed to disolve any foreign work contracts (ie Bechtal/ Halliburton)...so when and if its "real" democracy" ever works out and they "have the right" for autonomy, that Iraq parliment or Religious cleric department, (whomever wins the upcoming civil war), will disolve all these billion dollar contracts

Has anyone calculated how much taxpayers will upchuck in "cancellation" penalties. Has anyone read a copy of these pentagon contracts?
I bet they are pretty steep cancellation clause, like materials and % of lost profit

Is this a great country, or not. Hey, I want in on all these lucrative deals going on under-the-table. By the way, I wonder how much of this contract work is finished; and how much has not even commenced due to "unsafe streets". I hear it will be getting real hot over there soon, and there are rolling blackouts in Bagdaddy, or no juice at all.
What a con job!!!

From Alterman:

Quote of the Day: “You can’t distinguish between Al Qaeda and Saddam when you talk about the war on terror”.

The comments by the 9/11 Commission, Bush and Cheney all are true -- but from different viewpoints.

Iraq has been involved in terrorism -- there's no disputing that notion with examples from the 1993 World Trade Center bombers to payments to Palestian "martyrs". Iraq and Al Qaeda also have a relationship (e.g., communicated with each other and provided some small support). Nobody said that Iraq acted as Al Qaeda's sugar daddy. Nobody said that Iraq helped with 9/11. But they certainly communicated with each other. Stephen Hayes book "The Connection" outlines many of these points.

Nobody is lying -- everybody is just spinning. Both the left and the right.

The only people who believe this are you and that crackpot Laurie Mylroie. Iraq had nothing to do with the 1993 WTC bombers.

It is one thing for pundits, press aides, and bloggers to "just spin." It is another thing entirely for the Vice President to perpetuate the shameless half-truthing that misled us into the kind of conflict in which we engaged. It is this defiant, unreflective self-righteousness that is the true polarizing catalyst for the country. I thought Bush said he was going to be a "uniter"?

Dismissing it as "just spin" is a red herring.

"Me" summed it up (a WTC bomber found haven in Iraq, Basharov....please don't reply with Taziz's claims), Iraq was in contact with Al Qaeda.
I wasn't aware that the admin claimed that Iraq had tried to attack the US.

Exactly who are you calling a liar, when you can't even present the facts?
