Over the last three years, I have had a succession of numerous medical symptoms, some fairly serious which even led me to the hospital for checkups. These symptoms included: headaches, stiff necks, trembling, heart palpitations, backaches, muscle spasms, ears ringing, panic attacks, waking up in the middle of the night, numbness. These all came one at a time, or so it seemed. The doctors never found anything wrong: told me to lose a little weight and exercise more. One day I thought, maybe I’m eating too much sugar: a spoonful with each cup of coffee in the morning, a candy bar mid-afternoon, a couple of glasses of wine with dinner, a bowl of ice cream for dessert. I cut it all out. Two days later, my face went numb as rubber, my hands started tingling, and I lost 50% of my hearing, like I was underwater.

I was sitting in front of the computer at the time. I went to Google, typed in ALL of the symptoms listed above, because you can type in as many words as you want. Hit return and --boom-- linked to every diabetes website on the planet. Including some excellent ones not from the U.S., from which I learned that I wasn’t yet diabetic, but would be soon if I didn’t correct my diet. Which I did, and I’m fine.

Moral of the story? You can use Google as an expert medical system.

Brad, I don't understand why Google is needed to do what amounts to a word search through the papers on your server.

Use egrep, or find ... strings | egrep. Is it its hints that you didn't spell something correctly? Use an approximate regular expression matcher instead (agrep, for example). Or install glimpse on your server and have a private search engine. This will probably give you what you get from Google,

Is it the rankings or similarity finder you need? Try using software implementing a document similarity algorithm.

Of course there are also many commercial systems if you don't like the learning curve of free tools.

Years ago I had a business card printed up with only my name.
My excuse was that I never knew how long I was going to be anywhere, and that I could add anything else with a pen.

For the past 2 years I've just handed out my card and said:
