Wirelesstopia

Well, well, well. Outside Cafe Nefeli on Euclid I now have a choice between three strong wireless signals. "SurfandSip"--the pay-for network; "AirBears"--the standard Berkeley service; and "EECS"--which I understand to be a venture of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. An embarrassment of riches.

"SurfandSip" requires passwords and accounts I don't have. Let's try EECS...

EECS requires that you be authenticated with the EECS department (MAC address authentication). Use AirBears...

SurfandSip works very well and they usually have a relatively inexpensive yearly all you can eat price. They have a limited number of ports around the country though.

For $15.00 per month, I get unlimited data at about 128K from Sprint, using my Treo 600 as either browser, client, or modem. Sprint sucks, in fact, customer service wise, Sprint sucks a near perfect vacuum. Their service though and the Treo voice quality is terrific.

Instead of carrying my wifi card around, I just carry my treo and a data cable.

I love Nefili! It's been a few years since I lived in that little guest house on La Loma. But what a nice memory for the first day of summer.

I remember a walk down University in Palo Alto ('stealing the enemy's bandwidth,' I called it to my Cal-alum fiancee) in which I went to log into the T-Mobile hotspot at Starbucks, only to find FOUR additional networks available (three of which were open with no apparent authentication requirement).

Free Wi-Fi is better than free cigars...and easier to use in California.

*Surfandsip is decent, I believe it originates from Brewed Awakening across the street. Anyone can use it.
*AirBears is for most UCB affiliates. But you knew that, and obviously you should have access. Surprising that you should get AirBears at Nefeli though.
*EECS is not avail for regular undergrads.
