Jesse Helms II (Small Mammals and a Sinking Ship Department)

Sally Greene of "Is That Legal?" has a fuller version of Jesse Helms's opinion of George W. Bush's tax cut:

IsThatLegal?: As right as Bush was on war, Helms says, he’s wrong on taxes. "I would not have voted for the tax cut, based on what I know. I think he was eager for attention, so the fellow down at the pool hall could say, 'Boy, that fellow has guts.' There is no doubt that the people at the top who need a tax break the least will get the most."

Looks like triangulation to me: We disagree with George W. Bush on tax cuts.

We agree with Jesse Helms on George W. Bush's tax cuts.

Fuck the two of them and get them as far away from my government as possible, or that government doesn't deserve to exist.

No compromise.

I really really really despise Jesse Helms in a lot of ways.
At the same time I have this uneasy respect for
him somewhere in the back of my soul, maybe for
hanging in there for as long as he did
but probably more for ... occasional flashes of
common sense insight as well as his ability to laugh at himself.

The above quoted comment is in the "occasional flashes of common sense category"

Here's the "ability to laugh at himself category":

Way back when when I was 15, in high
school, and bursting with passion for the Democratic party's version of liberalism someone
got me a book of Doug Marlette's political cartoons. Marlette was from North Carolina like
Helms, and he basically started out his career
by mocking Helms. A lot of it was quite vicious. Apparantly, once upon a time Marlette finally got to meet the object of his pen's scorn. He walked
into Helms' office and was surprised to see the
office walls plastered with his own cartoons and
caricatures of the North Carolina senator as well
as the famous Hustler photo montage (JH and
Michangelo's David in a homoerotic situation).

Like I said, I really really really despise Jesse
Helms for reasons which folks on this blog can
surely understand. But little things like that
make a small part of me respect him sometimes.
Sometimes.

Since when does cutting taxes take guts? That tactic must be the easiest, most irresponsible
ploy of all. How many are eager to pay taxes,
for god's sake?
