Cory Doctorow writes about high-tech oven mitts:
Boing Boing: A Directory of Wonderful Things: High tech oven-mitts
This month's "Play" section in Wired reviews three super-sexy high-tech oven mitts -- a synthetic rubber one, a translucent silicone one, and a kevlar-and-nomex fingered glove adapted from a welder's glove. It's a sweet application of new materials science to housewares.
Let me, for one, be the first to welcome our modern materials science-based protectors of our hands from extreme heat.

Posted by: Adrian Spidle on July 8, 2004 07:18 AMThe Wall Street Journal reviewer tested one of those silicone mitts by sticking his hand into a vat of boiling peanut oil. One of the stupidest things I have ever heard of in my life, and working industrial operations I have heard of some stupid ones...
But it did work - that time anyway.

Posted by: Cranky Observer on July 8, 2004 07:34 AMThey may provide protection from peanut oil, but you won't be able to pick up anything smaller than a breadbox - very difficult to handle small items.
Posted by: lakemichigan on July 8, 2004 07:47 AMLet me echo lakemichigan's comment. These mitts are fine for big pans and the like, but you can't take the cover off a pot with one. A great feature is that they are waterproof. This is nice when you are pouring the pasta into the colander.
Posted by: Bernard Yomtov on July 8, 2004 08:06 AMEr ... not to be extremely snide, rude and anal retentive, but aren't you already the second to welcome them?
Posted by: Dan on July 8, 2004 08:10 AMCooks Illustrated also tested the mitts by sticking their hand in boiling water. It worked. But once again, the issue of not being able to manipulate anything made them say that they prefer their little over mitts and pot holders.
I have used a silicon tortilla warmer. It is sort of OK. Not all applications, apparently, are equally valid.
Posted by: Carol on July 8, 2004 08:19 AMOff topic, but you really must check out this press conference with Scott McClellan. You just can't make this kind of stuff up! Raising the tone, heh.

Don't they have interns at the Wall Street Journal?
If not, they should have gone upstairs to the editorial section - I'll be they have lots of eager young Coulter/D'Souza wannabe's.

thanks Kosh
I wonder if there is some way to improve the calibre of the reporter's side. Even here some questions seem better than others. Maybe there could be a pre-session scrum to make the best use of this 30 minute production.
Is it edited? pre-scripted? I'd wish for more humor if only to get around lines like
" continue to talk about his vision and his leadership for the future of America".
Without some major changes to the format, I fear the audience for this production could be reduced to the families of the participants. I know I've had my dose for the month.
After playing with the mitts in Whole Foods, I've decided that, while they're not dextrous enough, they make fine hand puppets. Plus, you get the benefit of being able to have a (very careful) Blade Runner moment by reaching into boiling water to retrieve, if not an egg, an ear of corn.
Posted by: LarryB on July 8, 2004 10:03 AMMy wife bought two of the silicone potholders. I was dubious, because while they might resist heat, that is, won't melt or catch fire, I suspected that they might transmit heat a lot better than the old-fashioned cloth oven mitts/potholders. So, if you put it on a wood surface, a hot pot wouldn't hurt the mitt, but might scorch the surface underneath.
Posted by: Art Nevksy on July 8, 2004 11:14 AMI bought a mitt for my wife for Christmas.
It wasn't nearly as romantic as you'd think.
Great mitt. No problem picking up lids for us folks with a modium of dexterity.
