Fafblog's Giblets makes the case against John Edwards:

He is too inexperienced! With only six years of experience in politics John Edwards is not qualified for the vice presidency. Now, if those six years were as Texas governor and if he were running for president, things would be totally different. But as it stands, he is too inexperienced!
He is a trial lawyer! As a trial lawyer Edwards repeatedly stole money from poor corporations to give to greedy children crippled by their products! Do we really need a vice president who is a lackey of Big Children? Giblets thinks not!
It seems to me from a distance that regardless of experience, Senator Edwards possesses attributes not displayed by the present incumbent. What qualites a president must have is an interesting question. I suspect that a capacity to exercise independent judgement, a reasonable level of intelligence and political competence might be the minimum. OTOH taking money from poor corporations for the effects of their products is definitely a strike against Senator Edwards.
Posted by: wmmbb on July 10, 2004 09:30 PMHow about being willing to do a little work to learn the fundamentals about the situation you are about to make a decision on. Edwards clerly shows that.

...but Giblets?
Posted by: Frank Wilhoit on July 11, 2004 07:09 AMThis morning's Stephanopolous interview with Lindsey Graham (and Mary Landrieu) offered a textbook example in argumentation theory:
After showing a clip of a focus group that unanimously thought Cheney was a liabiliity (associations to Halliburton, repeating misleading statements on Iraq WMD etc) Stephanopolous asked Lindsey Graham about Cheney's credibility. Graham's response: we should shouldn't focus so much on the trial lawyer aspect of Edwards!
Time to find a copy of "La nouvelle rhetorique"
Posted by: CSTAR on July 11, 2004 09:41 AMEdwards only accomplishment appears to be destroying the obstetrics profession by peddling emotional junk science to juries. Maybe Kerry chose him to appeal to Babs Ehrenreich.
Posted by: Patrick R. Sullivan on July 11, 2004 10:29 AMWell it's a good thing Bush stopped all that scientific junk!
Edwards' other accomplishment may be: President in '12, after eight years of Kerry.
Posted by: Lee A. on July 11, 2004 11:52 AMInexperienced. So what? What has experience done? The idiot Cheney is experienced and has been a destroyer of America's freedoms, has been instrumental in the biggest humiliation in U.S. history, and is supremely likely to bring on fascism if left in office.
Write email and letters to the idiots that supprt Cheney. Ridicule them. Equate destroying the bill of rights as equal to osama.
Go post some replies at jihadwatch.org, tell them what idiots they are for supporting endless war, suppoting the erosion of our rights, and for aiding and abetting fascisist mind-control in America.
It is a fight for our freedoms. Don't sitback and watch.
Posted by: phil on July 11, 2004 12:17 PMOh please. I can understand why someone would dislike Edwards because of his policies, because he was a trial lawyer, because someone who voted for the Iraq war should not shift his postion, because he is not enough of a tough guy, or some other reason. It don't agree with you, but the above positions could be sincere, at least.
But do not tell me that:
a) you support Bush and
b) you oppose Edwards because he is "inexperienced."
You know perfectly darn well that whatever "inexperience" Edwards may have has been dwarfed by Bush's.
So cut the line.

Patrick R, Sullivan -- yes, in the sense that swimming pools are obstetric in nature.
Y'know, I keeo hearing people rave about Fafblog, and every time I read it my reaction is "this would probably be funny if I were on the same drugs as them."
I just don't get it.

Posted by: Brad DeLong on July 11, 2004 08:43 PMThe "inexperience" argument is not much different from any other effort to muddy up a political opponent. Such efforts tend to be hypocritical, but that is hardly the issue (unless you can make it stick with voters). The folks writing faxable tomes about Edward's inexperience (by which they mean inexperience in government) are generally the same ones who've "run against Washington" whenever they've had a baby Bush or a Reagan heading the ticket. Now, they have Cheney as a standout deficit for the ticket, and Bush running on experience. Edwards is all that the press says he is - a rags to riches success, a populist at a time when populism might sell, an attractive, energetic campaigner. Where is he weak? Callow youth, limited experience, lawyer. So that will be the where he'll take his hits, while Cheney suffers from too much of the same old "experience" that the public hates in Washington.
Posted by: kharris on July 12, 2004 08:02 AMWhere is Edwards weak? I'd say in his own state of North Carolina for one. And, I'm sure everyone will give careful consideration to this:
http://nationaljournal.com/taylor.htm
" Edwards also won a fortune suing obstetricians and hospitals on behalf of babies born with cerebral palsy, at a time of accumulating medical evidence that botched deliveries are very rarely the cause of that disease. Cerebral palsy lawsuits have spurred doctors to order millions of medically unwarranted cesarean deliveries in recent decades.
"Edwards has claimed that he took such cases only when he had strong evidence. Perhaps. But as he well knew, the lawsuit industry does nothing for the vast majority of babies with cerebral palsy whose claims don't look like winners. And when a North Carolina state legislator sought in 1991 to create a special fund for all families victimized by the disease while curbing malpractice awards, Edwards helped defeat the bill, according to The New York Times.
"So most brain-damaged babies' families still got no help; malpractice premiums kept going higher; more and more medically unwarranted cesareans were done; and Edwards kept getting richer."
Edwards only accomplishment appears to be destroying the obstetrics profession by peddling emotional junk science to juries. Maybe Kerry chose him to appeal to Babs Ehrenreich.

Filter-tipped brands have a double-length filter inserted between every two cigarettes; filters are sealed to the rods and then cut in half to produce two cigarettes, each one having a filter on one end.
