Club Ed of Santa Cruz

If you need to learn to surf, both the Fourteen-Year-Old and the Eleven-Year-Old strongly, strongly recommend Club Ed of Santa Cruz.

I'd suggest Waikiki, but the travel might be burdensome.

Sigh!

I should have added that our local schools in Hawai'i have just (this spring) added surfing as an organized sport.

Santa Cruz is the home of Mavericks, the 50 foot killer waves. Also, Santa Cruz is within the bloody triangle, where great white sharks like to roam. Brad is very brave to allow his kids to learn surfing in Santa Cruz. My 8 year old was denied permission to take a surf lesson as part of the UCLA summer camp, because he did not swim a entire Olympic-length lap in the pool without touching bottom. (He demanded a retest but they wouldn't give him another chance.) He was so sad he pretended to be sick the next morning so that he wasn't stuck making sand castles on the beach and not out in the waves with the surfing kids. I'd rather have my kids learning to surf than to play polo at Will Rogers Park with the Governor's children.

As an ole 1960s surf rat from Santa Barbara, I can testify that the way to learn to surf is to be at the beach many, many days. Because the waves are so unpredictable, to learn the elements of surfing requires much more time "sacrifice" than does skiing, for example. You can take your kids to the mountains 5 sundays during a winter, and they actually ski, over and over again every time. A day a the beach in all but the best spots in the world will most likely be a bust; no waves worth riding. The best surfers have spent the most hours on the waves, and many skipped lots of school to accumulate this experience.
The best way to learn to surf in California is to be an undergrad at UCSB; walk from the dorm to the beach every day; get in a few waves after class when the surf is decent. Santa Cruz waves are too crowded and competitive for beginners. UCI waves are even more crowded and competitive.

Brad -- we must have seen you in the line-up (more like a gaggle) at Cowles -- beautiful weekend for beginniers (no real waves, but sunny and fun!).

While UCSD does has a few more surf spots close to campus than UCSC, crowds on the waves are the blight of both places. UCSB is the unchallenged choice for that perfect blend of surf and scholarship.
