Worthy Economists

Tyler Cowen praises Gordon Tullock:

Marginal Revolution: Gordon Tullock triumphant: My colleague Gordon Tullock, along with Thomas Schelling, is one of the most deserving scholars never to have received a Nobel Prize...

Let me add my own kudos. He is a genius, a madman, and always fascinating. It seemed to me at the time a great pity (and it seems to me now a great pity) that James Buchanan's "Public Choice" Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science was awarded to Buchanan alone, and not to James Buchanan + Gordon Tullock + Mancur Olson.

What about adding Anthony Downs? He was surely among the pioneers, no matter how awfully flawed his application of Hottelling competition to politics is.

"He is a genius, a madman, and always fascinating. "

I've been told a few other things about him too (i.e. he's a world class jerk). But it is odd that the co-author (and former friend of James Buchanan) of The Calculus of Consent didn't share the Nobel.

He is an insufferable dinner partner, with a bloated sense of himself. He is rude to an extreme, without the supreme accomplishments that might make his rudeness supportable. Completely self-centered. His economics fits his personality well.

Isn't there a rumor that Gordon Tullock insulted some influential member of the Nobel committee? I seem to recall hearing something to that effect.

I wonder how many other deserving Nobelists have been overlooked or deliberately slighted? I am convinced that F.A. Hayek only got the Nobel because Ludwig von Mises, who was his teacher, died the year before. Mises, like Tullock, was brilliant but a pain in the ass and would never have been recognized.

Did Mises write anything with a lasting influence in economic science? Exactly. Hence, no Nobel.

I'm with Brad: Gordon and Buchanan should have shared the prize.
