A professor told me a story once. After almost reaching the end of teaching an econ course, a student, thinking the partial differential signs are the number 2 asks, "Why not just cancel the twos?"

Didn't we steal/copy a lot of technology from the Brits during this period? Does catch-up imply a faster rate of change at some point?
