The Agitator Is Agitated

This time it's Pete Guither pulling an Inigo Montoya ("I don't think that word means what you think it means") on the clearly-misnamed Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty, which weighs in against the medical use of marijuana:

TheAgitator.com: Medical Marijuana - a trojan horse for liberals wanting to get women to act like goats: "Pushing to legalize marijuana is the best evidence of the remarkable, deadly selfishness of your average, self-centered Liberal.  They know the above facts better than most because many of their close friends have become addicts, and their lives were destroyed. Yet selfish, self-centered Liberals don't care about any of that – they just want their marijuana, cocaine, or whatever designer drug is in fashion.  What they won't admit is that many cannot enjoy their sexual activities without using the drugs – this is the dirty little secret that nobody wants to talk about. The effects of marijuana and cocaine are often more powerful than Viagra.  The Liberal guy pushes drug use because everyone knows drugs sweep away a woman's natural reluctance to behave like a barnyard goat."

I don't use drugs, I don't even drink. But I do think desperately ill people should be able to get marijuana if it makes them more comfortable. Color me offended.

Individual Liberty isn't as liberious or as individual as i remember. If people wish to make it like barnyard goats, what is that to anyone else? And it's news only liberals are using drugs and whores.

Is that what it is--sexual activiites! I must try these drugs immediately!

Posted by: Lee A. Arnold at December 2, 2004 09:36 PM

That is (inadvertantly) hilarious.

Oh no the jig's up! /me pulls up his pants and runs from the barn, leaving his woman behind while a join smolders in the hay.

reefer madness prevails! this guy Aldrich has a bright future penning the next great anachronistic screenplays and pulpy, dime store novels.

Reefer Girl: The frank, biting story of a young girl of the slums, and how she was caught in the toils of evil.

Marijuana Girl: She traded her body for drugs -- and kicks! Telling the plain, uncensored truth about teenage addicts -- and their desperate search for thrills!

Vice Rackets of Soho: A rare glimpse into the lives of our lost generation. Exposing the white slave rackets of the Reefer Club which flourish unchecked in that squalid square mile of Vice.

I've no personal experience of the barnyard goat, but if they're anything like the Welsh sheep of my youth, this guy might be quite disappointed about how uncompliant they can be when they're not really in the mood for a sensual experience.

My hypothesis is that many conservatives -- not all, clearly, but probably more than liberals -- are incapable of self-motivated restraint. They believe that people, unless their "impulses" are repressed, will spiral out of control. People with poor impulse control may become self-destructive hedonists, but a better (though still not very nice, IMHO) option is to become a conservative who uses (theistic or governmental) external motivations to keep impulses in check. This is clearly the case with George W. Bush, whose conversion to conservative-Methodist Christianity was explicitly in response to his alcoholism. Of course, occassionally the external impulse control fails (see O'Reilly), just as for liberals, ordinary, common-sense restraint fails (see Clinton).

Anyway, the key here is that conservatives believe that all people have poor impulse control. Thus they think that liberals don't operate under self-motivated restraint, but under no restraint at all, like the self-destructive hedonists they think they would otherwise be.

I hope that people don't take my broad-brush generalization at face value. I have no data to support it: just impressions from columns like Aldrich (among others. I think Jack Chick is the clearest exemplar of the mentality).

I knew there was a reason I reefused to smoke pot all those years ago, I just never figured it out.

Posted by: Carol at December 3, 2004 04:13 AM

Gosh, they didn't teach me that at Liberal School.

Posted by: masaccio at December 3, 2004 05:00 AM

And here I thought alcholol served that purpose!

Posted by: Zues at December 3, 2004 06:29 AM

Poor guy, can't turn a woman on, thinks others who can, must be using drugs on the girls.

Posted by: big al at December 3, 2004 06:34 AM

When I was first in college, I smoked dope a lot more than I got laid.

This included when I smoked dope with women.

Whatever these "barnyard goat" women were smoking, it wasn't pot.

This agitator fella isn't really saying what he means., is he?

"woman's natural reluctance to behave like a barnyard goat"

I'm not sure how to put it wittly and snappily, but there's a very strong and obviously deniable racial undercurrent here. Amongst other things.

The lapsed Midwesterner in me is trying to map this attitude to barnyard goats, at least as they act in the Red states.

If he[?] means that it will make her eat everything in sight, well, the "obesity epidemic" I keep hearing about must mean there are a lot of Chronic cases out there. If--as I think is intended from context--the suggestion is that medical marijuana will increase sexual activity, well, (1) we already have Prozac for that and (2) dude hasn't seen too many barnyard goats.

Of course, it's also trying to figure out how the "agitator" knows that giving a woman Viagra will make her act like a barnyard goat. (Or is he[?] suggesting that seeing an erect penis in and of itself causes a woman to drop her inhibitions? If so, can they really be strong inhibitions?

Fortunately, the male species has already legalized the drug that makes a woman act a like a barnyard goat - ALCOHOL.

I would rather have my daughter smoking (ingesting through brownies preferably) pot than drinking, any day of the week. Less like to have her skirt up with dope than alcohol.

I say legalize the raw products that are used to make cocaine, cut out the middle man, and tax the refining process in America. We would cut a lot of money out of organized crime and have less addicts and less potent coke.

What? Where does treatment of terminal cancer patients cross the line into some sort of aphrodisiac? Is he suggesting that *he* has trouble bagging babes without some chemical assistance?

The "Princess Bride" quote is from the character Fezzik, played by Andre the Giant, at least principally. But I agree with you about it's use in this case.

". . . and Bill Hicks rolled in his grave." should be the next verse from this cranky, cranky man . . .

Sheesh.

It's one thing to beat up on Brooks and Friedman for their unrelenting silliness. But come on, this is way too easy! Talk about low hanging fruit..

Posted by: Dan at December 3, 2004 09:09 AM

Wow, that guy is really clueless about the effects of marijuana and cocaine.

Posted by: Shane Wealti at December 3, 2004 09:13 AM

So we're back to "Reefer Madness" and good girls turning into sex fiends with a single toke.

Posted by: me2i81 at December 3, 2004 09:41 AM

What outrageous and appalling ignorance of the effects of drugs.

"The effects of marijuana and cocaine are often more powerful than Viagra."

Hahahaha. If only.

What mind-numbing idiocy and waste of good bandwidth.

Sadly, this sort of hyperventilating disinformation is worse than silly and in fact reduces the possibility that potential drug users believe in any drug's real potential for harm. Most teenagers with any experience of either are unlikely to believe that pot is a sexual performance enhancing drug. As many others have pointed out, alcohol is the real disinhibitor, which itself pales as a threat in comparison to the potential harm from "date-rape" drugs, that were all originally developed by our fine pharmaceutical firms for other purposes, one presumes. (Then wasn't "heroin" originally a trade name?) Maybe if these pharmaguys would just get a patent on some strain of BCBud, then it's medical benefits would be apparent. Cleverly, Pfizer, Glaxo- and the rest have avoided hiring dark skinned jazz players as "detailers" on their existing products, and so have cruised under the radar of the anti-pot crowd.

Scientists need a sample of Gary Aldrich's DNA so that we can determine once and for all how a human infected with mad barnyard goat disease can retain enough muscle control to use a keyboard.

'The "Princess Bride" quote is from the character Fezzik, played by Andre the Giant, at least principally.'

Is Not! That was Inigo Montoya!

Posted by: me2i81 at December 3, 2004 01:53 PM

The only thing I take away from this is that Pete Guither apparently has an, um, intimate knowledge of how barnyard goats behave.

Posted by: CD318 at December 4, 2004 12:55 PM

It isn't just funny it's tragic.
First it shows a complete ignorance of the effects of these drugs,
But more, it continues the ridiculous lumping of Marijuana in with truly dangerous drugs, which marijuana is not.
When was the last time you saw two potheads slugging it out in a prkinglot a 2;30 AM? hmmmm....?

Posted by: J. A. Sherman at December 5, 2004 02:50 PM

At 2 a.m. after a couple of joints ? A pizza, please, with extra cheese and pepperonis ... you other guys can have the fights, the women and the goats.
