"Language" Gene

Glenn Reynolds reminds us that--viewed from the outside--the planet we live on is already a very strange and wonderful place. Witness the "language" gene:

Instapundit.com: MUTANTS ARE TAKING OVER THE WORLD, using a weird ability to communicate thoughts to coordinate their actions. Okay, so it's old news now. . . .

Brad this isn't a language gene and Stephen Pinker is a prick for saying that it is (and for a variety of other reasons).

Tsk. I blogged about this more than 24 hours before Glenn did. You're just not checking The Best Blogs frequently enough, sir.

;-)

And if Pinker is a prick, we need more like him, and besides, I know a lot of women, and a few men who like pricks, not to mention that I find my own useful.

But what Pinker has to do to with this, other than being a prominent expert on language who gave a quote to this particular WashPo take on a story covered worldwide, I dunno. He's not a geneticist, he had as much to do with the research and explication and resulting paper as Bradford and I did, and all in all, insulting Pinker seems quite the non-sequitur. Later genetic research, and other approaches may, of course, in future challenge this finding, but meanwhile it is indeed fascinating, in my humble opinion.

I didn't say it was a "language gene," I said it was a "'language' gene."

True. But the "MUTANTS ARE TAKING OVER THE WORLD, using a weird ability to communicate thoughts to coordinate their actions" line was very good.

Great. Now mice are going to be talking during the TV shows!
