“Every man and woman should vote the straight Democrat ticket as shown on the right”

Oh wow, I see what Brad DeLong is talking about. How could I be so blind? Those damn Democrats! Have they no shame?

Thank you Professor DeLong.

Good riddens to bad stromming rubbish.

From an African-American reader of this terrific site. Liberal and Democratic and planning to remain happily so. Do not care a whit for so-Buckley. Our Yale is sure enough no longer yours.

From an African-American reader of this terrific site. Liberal and Democratic and planning to remain happily so. Do not care a whit for so-called conservative response. Ta-ta Bill Buckley. Our Yale is sure enough no longer yours.

Sorry for mis-post.

Brad,
Your 9/11sleaze link currently points to the California bishops story.

Trent Lott must immediately quit his position as Senate Majority leader. At the minimum, the man has proven himself to be too stupid to hold the post. His comments at the one hundredth birthday party for Strom Thurmond are bewildering to say the least. My guess is that Lott may have been tired and speaking extemporaneously when praising the old man for his vile run for the Democrat Presidential nomination of 1948. It is understandable that Lott didn’t want to hurt the feelings of someone who has done so much to undo the harm he caused some fifty years ago. After all, if we can cut slack for ex-Klu Klux Klan member, Senator Robert Byrd, who still employs the reprehensible term “nigger”---we are also obligated to forgive Thurmond!

Why wasn’t Senator Lott thoroughly prepared for the birthday event? One of his staff members could have been assigned to write a carefully worded address. This is especially true on the weekend when an important race was being held deep in the Old South. Suzanne Terrill may not have lost due to Lott’s gross idiocy, but his diarrhea of the mouth certainly didn’t help her. Furthermore, why has Lott failed to make amends immediately after the fiasco took place? Is he politically tone deaf to the enormous danger that he has caused? President Bush shouldn’t be forced into the awkward predicament of asking Lott to resign as Senate Majority leader. Lott should have both the decency and the common sense to hand in his resignation.

"Is he politically tone deaf to the enormous danger that he has caused?"

I meant to say enormous damage. Nonetheless, the Republican Party is in enormous danger of destroying a lot of hard work of those who have desperately tried to heal the racial divisions of the past.
